Russophobia, the Oligarchs and Russians living here etc

Couldn't find a dedicated russophobia thread. This is pretty grim, very long though. I'm not sure what to make of it all, some of the people interviewed clearly have an agenda but there have been stories of discrimination against Russians in Estonia for a long time

Just found this indirectly via Twitter. it may be that Cyprus has come under pressure from certain quarters:

Missed this thread before. It's amusingly desperate stuff.

Mrs Frank is a British Russian and has experienced zero russophobia since the Ukraine invasion started because everyone else in the universe besides RD2003 is able to differentiate between Russians who are complicit in, and profit obscenely from, Putin's regime and ordinary people who work in hospitals.

I only found it because I was looking for somewhere suitable to post the above news. The premise of the OP is entirely predictable, alas.

But won't anyone think of the oligarchs?

How could you possibly know what 'everyone in the universe' thinks about Russians or anybody else?

As in any other dubious regime, including our own, and those in the (ahem) 'European Family,' it isn't just oligarchs who are complicit in their sordid business. If millions of lesser mortals weren't also complicit they likely wouldn't last a week.

in Russia anything short of compliance often comes with a life sentence. Or a death sentence.

Complicity comes from willing acts, freely chosen. Like (picking an example at random) your relentless mealy-mouthed, wilfully disingenuous, bad-faith apologism.

There are millions upon millions of Russians who freely choose complicity with the current regime, just as they have historically, and as in many other parts of the world.

Nothing bad happens to Russians who keep their heads down and just get on with their lives.*

*Note to idiots: this doesn't imply any personal sympathy with the Russian regime.

Don't protest, don't speak out, don't call it a war, don't ask questions.

Also, remain straight at all times.
Yes. It will be interesting to see what happens in the medium to long term, and the only guarantee is that we on here will not approve of any possible outcome. Some will be downright outraged.

What outrages you the most about the special operation?

That more Ukrainians haven't died horribly.*

*As should be obvious from all my Ukraine posts, this isn't really what I think. But I'm guessing it's in line with what you want me to say, so there you go.

war is bad

russia attacking the ukraine is also bad

it hard to figure out how that message is so diluted in the current context

I think the use of Oligarcy wrt Russia is well past is sell by date. Its convenient to group the parasitic theiving shite together in a meme sorta way, but the classical Yeltsin oligarch setup has been consumed and sidelined now. These fuckers are vunerable and need ongoing patronage from Sun king Putain, rather than the state needing them any longer. Borrowed time scumbags.

I don't take calls from my family when I am out in public spaces because I don't want to speak Russian in public. Not because I think I'll get assaulted or abused - I feel guilty. All the time.

Two British peers were among 50 people who attended a party organised by the Russian ambassador to the UK at his opulent residence in west London last month, to mark the creation of a Russia independent of the Soviet Union.

Andrei Kelin, the Russian ambassador, spoke at the event where he sought to justify his country’s bloody invasion of Ukraine, while those attending included the Conservative Lord Balfe and cross-bencher Lord Skidelsky.

An account of the event published by the Sunday Times includes pictures of Kelin, who is banned from the UK parliament, addressing an audience of about 50, including Russian embassy staff, foreign diplomats and a number of Britons.

Kelin reportedly said “in order to develop normally, Russia must first deal with significant threats to its security” – a clear reference to Moscow’s attack on Ukraine last February aimed at overthrowing the elected government of Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

The ambassador also accused Britain of making a “big strategic miscalculation” by engaging in a confrontational approach to Moscow. The UK, alongside other western countries, has strongly supported Ukraine, providing arms and aid since the start of the war to help Kyiv restore its internationally recognised borders.
