Russell Brand: rape and sexual abuse allegations, grifting and general dodginess - discussion

re: the joke - Brand was the target of that joke, not Jesus.
I can’t believe I’m having to explain this to a grown-up.

The target of the joke was clearly the Catholic church and those who are part of it as well as Brand.

There is still no evidence that Brand has joined the Catholic church, so your sneering comment just comes across as standard anti-Catholic bigotry

It's ironic that you refer to having to explain to a grown up; once again you demonstrate zero self awareness.

On the issue of religion, Catholicism or whatnot... if there's ever going to be any meaningful change for the better, it will be done by working class people irrespective of religious, agnostic or atheist beliefs. In truth, some of the most decent human beings I've had dealings with have believed in religious stuff that makes absolutely no sense to me. I've also had dealings with the occasional socialist, anarchist or atheist who have been deeply unpleasant. Attack the hierarchies and powerful religious institutions by all means, but attacking those without power who happen to have personal religious beliefs is a dead end.

you probably actually mean you find some christians problematic, not christianity as a philosophy, right?
No there are issues with the philosophy as well ,but then thats true of most religions and at the end of the day people being evil dicks is because of them being evil dicks irrespective of their religion.

Edited due to wayward esses.

If someone believes in whatever flavour of sky pixie as literal fact, I question whether they can be trusted to have on input on anything important. That said, most of the Irish descent Catholics in my social circle don't believe at all, but pretended to to get their kids into better school.

I think I'm still a Catholic in the church's eyes - I was baptised and never excommunicated - and I definitely don't have a problem with people criticising the church's hierarchy, misogynistic and homophobic doctrines, etc. etc.

You can’t really get away from the fact that Christianity is inherently misogynistic. It’s incontrovertible.

If people want to believe in sky pixies or fairies at the bottom of the garden, then as long as they're on our side of the barricades when it comes to the crunch ("the crunch" being international proletarian revolution) then I don't give a fuck.

And based on a fairy tale. All the hate and badness inherent in it is perpetuated by telling kids made up stories are true before they are old enough know better.
