If the best you have is (by definition) stale ready-ground coffee and a filter machine, it's no surprise you can't appreciate the difference.

Threw the stale stuff out. I have these sealed pod things ATM. There's some instant too, Wilkinsons own brand. :p

A friend of mine is big into her coffee. She spends a fair bit of money on different beans, various grinds, etc, but I find some of them supremely uninteresting and would prefer a decent instant.

Mellow Birds is just weird though.
A lot of them just taste nasty. Bitter.

When I was involved in animal rights, Barleycup seemed to be the drink of choice. I never really understood why, as coffee and tea are vegan.

Never tried it. No point if it's not got much caffeine in it.
According to pogofish it's got more caffeine than most medium roast coffees.

Surprisingly, at approx 335mg of caffeine per litre (MAFF), Mellow Birds is amongst the strongest instant coffees on the market - only a couple of
"Instant Espresso" brands are significantly higher at around 560mg/l.

In fact, 335mg/l makes Mellow Birds considerably stronger than most medium roast real coffees, which weigh-in somewhere between 140-210mg/l

Once you've worked out how you like it, it's no problem at all.
It takes me about a minute to grind the beans by hand and 30 seconds to brew.

A hand grinder and an Aeropress - though I'm probably awake by 8am on a Saturday when I prepare it.

No way would my nerves cope with a noisy grinder and an espresso machine.

Which is why its best to stick to some granules, a spoon, a mug, a kettle and some milk instead

You' said that shop coffee tastes better than instant.

You can have coffee that's better than shop coffee for a teeny investment in effort.

I can't imagine ruining my home made bread by drinking Instant coffee with it - just as I wouldn't ruin my tea by drinking Liebfraumilch.

It's just wake up juice ffs.
Get your priorities right!

Because caffeine is evil. Like bacon, alcohol and vaccinations.
