Palestine solidarity demos in the UK

Various threads this could be dropped into. (Apologies if it's already been posted elsewhere.)

A 71-year-old legal observer [...] who was wearing a hi-vis bib with “legal observer”

The way they look back down at her and then leave her and carry on, my God. 😡

Someone at my local one today had his friend (or maybe relative) in Rafah on a video call, and was going around the crowd showing us to him, that alone made it feel quite worthwhile.
Targeted actions against Elbit-linked companies continuing on a regular basis as well, e.g.:

Who is going?
I’m in

Sadly this time not me.

I have platelet donation booked for tomorrow.

I would have liked to have gone as weather is good and recent stuff from Tories about how these marches are undermining democracy/ British values as incensed me enough to want to go.

Good article.

The Jewish Bloc was big at the last demo.

They are getting more flack from other sectors of Jewish community for attending these marches now.

Speaking to BBC radio on Friday, Mark Gardner from the Community Security Trust, which monitors antisemitism, suggested that Jews attending the protests did not represent the views of the majority of British Jews.

He described them as either ultra-orthodox Jews or revolutionary socialist Jews who are "using their Jewishness so that people get the impression this movement is not fundamentally antisemitic".

In my opinion revolutionary socialist Jews like Barnaby Raine are great. Glad there are people like him helping to organise the Jewish Bloc at demos

A bit of research on that point, the most recent Institute for Jewish Policy Research survey found that 63% of British Jews identify as Zionist, whereas a similar survey in 2010 found a figure of 72%. Going into the full report, around a quarter self-define as either "anti-Zionist" or "non-Zionist", and among those aged 20-29, the proportion of self-identified Zionists falls to 57%. And this is all based on research from 2022, so not showing the results of the last few months at all. Obviously there is still a lot of attachment to Israel among a lot of people, but a position held by about a quarter of Jews is not the tiny fringe thing they're trying to portray it as. Obviously preaching to the choir here, but still feels worth saying.

Sky news also countering the government narrative:

On International Women's Day

The war has had devastating impacts on Gaza’s female population. Thousands have been killed, with women and children comprising around 70 percent of the victims. Two mothers are killed every hour in the war, the UN reports.

All of this courtesy of the IDF and Israeli government.

Only just seen that Leeds Uni's been occupied since last week:
Freedom's still good for ongoing coverage of the direct action stuff, eg:

more trade union blockades of arms factories. looking impressive with all the barriers though assuming they're not actual concrete blocks (hoping to be wrong though!).

There was a daytime demo in front of the Welsh parliament on Wednesday where this was being sang and shouted
There were cops but they didn't intervene
