Mpox - news and discussion

They're at risk from chicken pox. You cannot "catch" shingles.
I asked HR, I asked my line manager .
My understanding was that with the nature of my job the risk was incredibly low.
10 seconds Googling:

"However, you can catch chickenpox from someone with shingles if you haven't had chickenpox before.

Chickenpox can be particularly dangerous for certain groups of people. If you have shingles, avoid:
  • women who are pregnant and haven't had chickenpox before as they could catch it from you, which may harm their unborn baby
  • people who have a weak immune system, such as someone with HIV or AIDS
  • babies less than one month old, unless it's your own baby, in which case your baby should have antibodies (proteins that fight infection) to protect them from the virus

And remember people could be pregnant or immunosuppressed without you being aware of it.

In my line of work I got physically close to almost no one and I wear heavy tee shirts and my rash consisted of about 5 spots - all covered.
Perhaps run it past any HR department you have involvement with - three weeks off work ?

Apparently you can only spread chickepox via direct contact with shingles blisters, and luckily although I'd gone into work not knowing what I was sick with, it was back when everyone was still theatrically wide-berthing each other anyway.

By the time I got diagnosed there was no question of going into work, because of the risk to public health but mostly because shingles fucking batters and all I could do was shovel down codeine and curl up in a ball on the bedroom floor.

I was lucky enough to have asymptomatic shingles apart from the exquisite sensation somewhere between tickling and agony that had me sleeping on top of a duvet ...- thankfully a modest amount of codeine fixed that.
I went off on 20 mile bike rides as usual.

I seem to recall my line manager at the time was also my UNISON rep ...

The Foreign Press Association, Africa has registered its displeasure against media outlets using images of 'black' people alongside stories of the monkeypox outbreak in North America and the United Kingdom:

It's been reported that a lot of cases so far has been amongst man that have sex with other men, which I guess needs reporting as it's a fact that people most at risk needs to know, but I was thinking over the weekend, that I hope this doesn't result in increased homophobia, and it being labelled a 'gay plague' by some twats, like AIDS was when it first surfaced.

And, indeed racism, because it comes from Africa, and we witnessed an increase in racist incidents involving the Chinese community when Covid arrived.

I see the United Nations’ Aids agency has the same concerns.

Already happening :( A friend got in an argument about it at work earlier this week.

Some early genetic analysis. It’s amazing how quick this stuff happens these days.

Tin foil hat warning!

The suggestion that it has evolved faster than expected and occurred in the LGBT community would be Putin’s MO in my honest opinion.
It clearly has ‘evolved’ for greater human to human transmission.

Sounds like we need a monkey conspiracy thread.

I’m not a truther but I wouldn’t put it past him at all given his previous form of these kinds of attacks on foreign soil when there hasn’t been a war on. We’ve already had a nerve agent attack in Salisbury and a poisoning with a radioactive isotope in central London. It’s hardly a theory to be disregarded.

What you think Vlad is spreading Monkeypox?

I dunno about actively spreading it, although I wouldn't rule it out.

But I do think that Putin would be the type to play up the LGBT angle. He's a bit of a culture warrior in that respect.

Yeah we know he doesn't like teh gayz but considering the idea that he's unleashed a disease on the world that will affect the LGBT community is a bit down the rabbit hole is it not?

As is he killed everyone in Berezovsky’s circle before killing Berezovsky.
As is he attempted to murder an ex spy and his daughter with a nerve agent in Salisbury.
As is he murdered an ex FSB agent in a central London hotel with a radioactive isotope.

Rabbit hole?

Yeah I get all that but unleashing a virus on the world that's going to kill all the gay people is bordering on a bit of an Ian Fleming plotline don't you think?

It could just be a disease that’s spreading like... err.... a disease does.

Apart from those other times monkey pox spread of course. Were they russian practice sessions?

I’m not making a prediction. I’m flagging it as ‘suspicious’. And AFAIK before where we currently are humans usually got monkey pox from animals in Africa rather than gay saunas in Europe.

You can’t rush to say this is a gay issue after a few tens of cases. The outbreak looks to have started in nigeria, are you saying russia wanted to attack nigeria at the same time as ukraine? Why would putin think this is a good idea at all? I just don’t get it.

Covid threads were good on urban because they were mostly evidence based and not people wildly speculating.
