I didn't think the Penny piece was bad but just because somebody puts on a performance, particularly if that performance actually includes "being a performer", doesn't mean that they have no beliefs or positions.
It's obvious that MY changes the fine details of his act as and when he feels like it, but what is consistent is that he cultivates the appearance of someone who would do that, someone who completely gives no fucks, and that's a deliberate image, maybe one he believes himself to an extent. The Penny piece doesn't seem to get that "amoral hedonistic showman" is an act too. Certainly MY has a definite arc to his career and the positions that he's a showman about aren't going to be accidental.

Since this all started with that Butchersapron guy, he should know that, as someone who's spent the last few months looking to get involved with groups like afed and solfed and others in Bristol, where he lives, they were quite interested, being familiar with this site, in his attitude toward other people. They don't take kindly to cyberbullying, and neither do I. I asked after him because I had made it clear that I would not consider joining a group that tolerated members like that.
I joined this site because I thought it was a reasonably safe space for like minded people. How sad that people who profess to be involved in class politics are just as unpleasant at those they criticise.

I think the honest piece for Laurie Penny to write would have been a comparison with that guy Weev - whome she feted as a 'notorious prankster' and compared to Chelsea Manning and Julian Assange. She then realised he was an ideological antisemite and made a sort of reverse-ferret, but having been taken in buy him she might have been in a good position to examine why such figures are attractive and attract followers of a sort in turn. She dropped Weev when she realised he was serious, Milo isn't serious and that's 'weaponised insincerity' which sounds pretty bad alright, but she's still saying he's a nice guy underneath it all really. Just seems a confused piece where it's more about snappy phrase-making creating a gonzo sheen than a serious investigation or discussion.

I still refuse to believe that Penny didn't know what weev was about when she wrote that article. He was 'famous' for was being a nasty racist bullying prick and she was familiar enough with his image to have known it. And if by some tiny chance she'd heard of him but wasn't aware of that, the tiniest bit of research (i.e. 5 seconds on google) would have shown it beyond any doubt.
What I think is, she thought she'd look cool hanging around with these hackers and internet rebels and was willing to overlook their views/actions for the sake of her image and it backfired.
