Massive earthquake and tsunamis hit Japan

Cross posted as it's probably as relevant to this thread as the nuclear one

Kyodo News:
NEWS ADVISORY: Traces of radioactive iodine found in tap water in Tokyo, other areas: gov't (20:10)

Reuters live blog:
We don't have any more information on Kyodo News reports that radioactive iodine has been found in tap water in Tokyo and other areas. We will bring you more when we have it.

On the news last night they were talking about oil prices going down. As Japan will need more gas than oil at the moment. I find it really fucking crude (pun intended) that this is even a subject of talk at the moment. Ok, it is how it is, but that doesn't change the fact that it's so very callous, talking about profits, and the prices of things, when so many are in such utter dire trouble.

I worked for Traf*gura years ago when the Turkish earthquake struck, the brokers were creaming there pants at the possibilty of refineries down and the market turning, hadn't seen them so happy before....fuckin cunts....if I knew half of what I did now...I would have wikileaked the lot of them...cunts!!!

Was this a planned trip? Can you delay for a month or two easily? They have to be there so have to tell themselves it will be ok. Is your worry more quakes or radiation?

Probably radiation.
Virgin said we could move our tickets but it turns out that all flights cost a minimum of about £300 pounds more than our flights so would cost us an extra £900 quid or so. We would also have to travel at pretty inconvenient times and the family that we would be there to see would all be in school except for two days.

How long before you have to decide?

Only things at the nuclear plant seems to be coming under control, and with luck there will be good news in the next few days, so you could go ahead as planned.

It's fucking sickening isn't it. To these "people" money is far more important than human life. If there is a hell, there'll be a special place for these cunts.

It happens every day. People profit from bad luck, misfortune, war, turmoil, disaster. Sad but true. The scale of this disaster amplifies the nature of the markets.

26 year old kid turns 400,000 dollars into 4 million dollars in 3 days
from Kirainet.com - A geek in Japan by kirai

Some days ago a 26 year old Japanese guy bought 33 million yen (290,000 EUR/400,000 USD) of oil futures and 3 days later he had 322 million yen (4 million USD/2,85 million EUR) in his pocket thanks to the abrupt rise of oil prices caused by the Libyan crisis. A little bit of luck that will change his life forever. The news say that if he had waited more days he could have gotten 10 or 20 million USD, but he has proudly said that he preferred not to risk more and he has uploaded a photo of his bank account to the Internet showing 322 million yen in his balance.

(The link to that story is broken atm, as are a few links to Japanese blogs that I am subscribed to.)

If he has an ounce of humanity he will donate a substantial proportion of that profit back into disaster relief in his own back yard.

Are you addicted to live newsfeeds minnie..I can imagine you as a kind of hi tech newshound AI..scouring the web for live updated content and delivering to her virtual den (U75)

Virgin said we could move our flights for 'free' but are charging so much for seats now that we would be forced to pay a minimum of £900 pounds each extra to do so. Bah.

Just been looking though loads of travel insurance quotes and nobody seems to be singling Japan out. Just Libya Algeria etc

Two Survivors Found :eek::cool:

Nine days after they were believed killed by the tsunami, an elderly woman and a teenage boy were found alive in the rubble of their home in north-east Japan on Sunday.

The 80-year-old and her grandson survived by eating yoghurt and other remains from the refrigerator after being trapped in their home in Ishinomaki, one of the worst-hit cities on the coast.

They were found by police when 16-year-old Jin Abe called out for help from the roof of their residence. He had been trapped for a week and managed to pull himself from the debris and alert rescue workers.

His grandmother, Sumi Abe, is disabled and could not leave the property unaided. When she was found, she had lost feeling in at least one of her legs.

She looks remarkably welll for an 80-year-old who's been buried for 9 days

Are you insinuating something?

Certainly have to be careful with rescue news at this point, a few days ago there was a young man rescued and made a news story of, but then it turned out that he had wandered back to his home long after the tsunami had hit, and hadnt actually been trapped there the whole time.

Yes, I read that story. Course I'm not insinuating anything. I've already said earlier in the thread how pissed off I was when rescue teams left as people have been found alive up to 2 weeks after. I'm just saying she's looking good (other than obviously being shaken up). Happy she's not injured as well. Not sure about the condition of her son, although I think he's suffering from hypothermia and loss of feeling in one leg. Hope he's ok.

Did anyone mention the baby already?

(I know that's kind of an odd source...it's on plenty of other news sites but this is one of the only ones with the picture of the baby still up)

Turned out to be false:

Earlier reports that a four-month-old baby was reunited with her father after being plucked from the tsunami rubble in Ishinomaki yesterday, were misplaced.

It now appears that minutes after the Japan's Self Defence Force entered the town, a family handed their baby girl to the soldiers in an apparent selfless act, just as a tsunami alarm sounded at 11am local time.

The false alarm caused panic for the parents, who had been sheltered for three days in their ruined home, northeast of Sendai.

Buffett Says Japan Earthquake Creates ‘Buying Opportunity’
March 21 (Bloomberg)
“If I owned Japanese stocks, I would certainly not be selling them because of the events of the past 10 days or so,” said Buffett, speaking to reporters in the South Korean city of Daegu. “Something out of the blue like this, an extraordinary event, really creates a buying opportunity.”
“Something out of the blue like this, an extraordinary event, really creates a buying opportunity.”

There was a sad story on AJE tonight, a mother and her two children trying to find their house amongst the wreckage of a north Japanese town. The children had been in school when the tsunami hit and the school was built on higher ground specifically to protect against tsunami. Anyhow they were looking for their dad, who was not there, they found a piece of wreckage where they thought their house used to be and the little girl managed to find a family photo of their dad.
