Dog drifting atop roof rescued off coast of Kesennuma
SENDAI, April 2, Kyodo
A dog was rescued at sea off the coast of Kesennuma on Friday after being found drifting atop a roof believed to have been washed away by the killer tsunami triggered by the March 11 earthquake, Japan Coast Guard officials said.
Coast guard members aboard a helicopter involved in the day's search for those still missing after the disaster found the dog on the roof drifting along some 1.8 kilometers off Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, at around 4 p.m., according to the officials.
Three of the members approached the dog in a lifeboat and rescued it about an hour later after initial rescue operations by the helicopter failed as the dog got away from the roof to lumbers and other debris floating nearby, the officials said.
The dog's blackish collar has no clues about the owner such as address and contact numbers, they said.
The dog was keeping quiet and ate biscuits and sausages on a patrol boat, according to the officials.
