Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 vanishes without trace

I have to say that the fact the pings disappeared roundabout the limit of their fuel capacity means I am not too hopeful.

It surprises me that a highjacker would know enough to get the communications signals turned off, but not enough to realise the fuel would run out. Or that a highjacker would fly to the end of the fuel capacity and then land. It doesn't ring true.

But if it was a suicide bid the the captain or another member of the crew, why weren't they overpowered by other pilots as soon as they realised.

Seems like there's no logical explanation.

This really is a proper mystery. There could even be a ransom note for the passengers. It seems really well planned so what the hell did they plan to do with it. There can't be many places to land a plane like this without people noticing. Why turn tracking off if you just want to bring the plane down.

I am uneasy of the Malaysian authorities starting to be certain of foul play.
It might be premature to make such statements at this stage.

I believe the cockpit door is lockable from the inside.
If the pilot, pilots or hijackers wanted to lock themselves in, they easily could.

Maybe where we're going wrong is looking for someone like Osama bin Laden - TERRORIST! to be behind it when what we should be looking for is someone like Osama bin Laden - ECCENTRIC MILLIONAIRE (and 'Lost' fan).

Would have thought there was protocol never to leave anyone alone in the cabin. Not to say they didn't.

I really don't see how it was a highjacker. They were apparently using "navigational waypoints", so really knew what they were doing. That's not the kind of thing you learn even in 3 months of flight school 9/11 style.

Didn't the Ethiopian? pilot wait until the other pilot went to the toilet before locking the door and then flew the plane to Switzerland?

Wouldn't there be 3 pilots? Don't know who you mean by the Ethiopian pilot.

My instinct in, this is crew, because a lot of the details show technical knowledge. And the fact that they flew to the end of the fuel makes me less optimistic. Also the absense of any motive yet for a highjacking by crew.

it was quite recently, only two pilots on that flight but Ethiopia/Italy is a much shorter flight.

It would raise suspicion. But I see your point. Why no claiming responsibility yet, or ransom demand if it's terrorists?

No idea. I'm not saying it is terrorists. I'm just pointing out that if you're dedicated to a cause your job might be to spend 10 years training and being a commercial pilot.

Well why not, almost everybody else is. If they weren't, people would accuse them of not taking it seriously enough. Seems they can't really win

On Radio 4 this morning they said that the pilot's home was being searched, so they certainly haven't ruled out the possibility that it was crew rather than passengers.

They want to look at his flight simulator I reckon. Apparently it's not unusual for pilots to have flight simulators at home. I saw someone on a website mention that he had one and they're not cheap so therefore... blah blah blah. Apparently he built his own and was geeky like that. There's plenty of pictures of him around flying model airplanes etc. and he also had YouTube videos telling people how to fix things like aircon units, but I think people have decided because he had a flight simulator, he was obviously using it for the wrong reasons

when he had access to a plane why would he want a simulator?
