Plumdaff and Cupid Stunt aren’t repeating any “tropes” they are saying the refugees can’t cross the channel legally so have to use illegal and highly unsafe crossings to get here. No it isn’t illegal for them to claim asylum once they get here, no one said it was. What Plumdaff In particular is saying is that these refugees are forced into an impossible situation and that the govt isn’t acknowledging that.

French police basically use them as training dummies, for one thing. France is also in the Schengen area so they'll deport you straight back to Italy, Spain or Greece if you've ever shown up on the system there.
Lots of other reasons besides that. Everyday racism is much worse over there.
Curious that some on here rant and rave about how great the EU is but I’m not convinced if even those fleeing war and persecution aren’t interested.

France and other EU countries have far more asylum applications than Britain.
In the year ending March 2021, the UK received 26,903 asylum applications from main applicants only.
Over the same period, asylum applications to other EU countries have also seen a decrease.In 2020, the highest number of asylum applicants received in the EU+ were received by Germany (122,015 applicants) and France (93,475 applicants). In the same period, the UK received the 5th largest number of applicants (36,041) when compared with the EU+ member states, around 7% of the total asylum applicants in the EU+ and UK. This would represent only the 17th largest intake when measured per head of population.
