Sheffield school incident 1st May 2024

Whatever happened to all those non-lethal weapons like sticky foam and fired nets that were being touted as the future about a decade or so ago?

One problem with non-lethal stuff is that there is a lower bar for usage, hence we’ve seen people getting tazered for being a bit gobby etc. Also non-lethal doesn’t necessarily mean no harm.
And a problem with lethal stuff is (given the US as an example) it has a very low bar for usage. People get shot for all sorts of spurious reasons, including calling the police, and "swatting" is a thing. I'd be interested to know if things are much different in other countries where all cops are routinely armed. Either way, if all UK cops had guns, I wouldn't expect them to behave that differently to their US counterparts. Though I'd quite like to be wrong about that.
