Libya - civil unrest & now NATO involvement

Serious deja vu watching twitter today. The barracks in Benghazi are reported to have fallen to the protesters, unfortunately this news was widely reported on twitter in previous days and was either completely untrue or else reinforcements got to the area. Maybe it is actually true this time. Frankly Im not sure why I am even following this stuff so closely for a 3rd day given the unreliability of the info, but I cannot help myself.

Very little is clear, although it is tempting to believe that the regime are in quite some difficulty in a variety of places, especially in the east. There are more rumours of splits within the regime today than I had seen in previous days, but I place no faith in such reports at this stage. The stuff the regime are apparently saying on state tv also suggests that at the very least the uprising is too large for them to pretend it isnt happening at all.

Rumours about the oil infrastructure being affected also seem to have popped up today.

I've yet to see any credible reports of anti-regime protesters in Tripoli.

Such is the lack of quality info and the sheer amount of rumours and misinfo that it would not be too surprising if either the regime fell, or the uprising was completely crushed, without us hearing about it until some time later.

Yeah. I've pretty much stopped posting on here simply because the information/rumour fog is so thick it's hard to know what is happening. We do know that the death toll is really high, in the hundreds at least. But in terms of the success or failure of the revolt, its virtually impossible to know

Well if the Benghazi doctor that has been on Al Jazeera English a few times is right, then there are some military on the side of the people there, and they have vehicles/tanks.

At the very least, it seems increasingly clear that a lot of the Benghazi rumours that are on the internet are also rumours on the ground in Benghazi, but theres been very little video or photo evidence of much from there on Saturday or Sunday.

The livestream feed is still going and is a bit better than yesterday, especially as some people are translating what is said and posting in the chat (just have to ignore all the crap and dodgy links that are in the chat there).Images not so great, they are showing protesters but cant say much more than that.

CNN reports that a car laden with explosives was used to try to breach the compound, although its unclear whether this is a fresh event or another version of the story that was going around yesterday.

Edit to add some info about what the photos show.

Burnt buildings, original Libya flag flying from a building, people protesting, people posing on a tank/big gun, dead people, large numbers of people praying, IDs of 'mercenaries', group of people with yellow hardhats, mock hanging dummies including one with a yellow construction hat, a burnt vehicle that may have been crushed by a tank.

Rumours picking up pace regarding people coming out in Tripoli, certain important tribes dropping support for Gaddafi, and phone communications with Tripoli cut.

Yeah unless everyone on phone from Tripoli to the likes of AlJazeera are full of shit, it is kicking off there.

Here is a report about some of the stuff regarding Benghazi: http://www.haaretz.com/news/interna...zi-liberated-from-pro-ghadafi-forces-1.344666

Rumours about various tribes continue.

Also
Breaking Al Jazeera: Libyan Authorities arrest Islamic Scholar Al Sadeq Al Gheryani after he spoke to Al Jazeera over the phone tonight.

It would have been AlJazeera Arabic he spoke to, according to some reports he told tribes not to fall for the trap of turning against eachother, and then said that it was everyones islamic duty to protest.

just to say thanks to you and the others for keeping this thread so informed though your reading and posts. I don't have anything useful to say, but I'm reading it all, and I'm guessing I'm not the only one :)

I've just got in so not been able to keep tabs on things.

Gunshot in Tripoli is good news, I guess, for certain values of 'good'

livestream going NOW.

Thanks :)

Although the information has often been poor, a reasonable enough percentage of twitter/phonecall news has been at least partially confirmed by photos, some media are running with the stories, so I may as well continue posting about this stuff.

If many of the tribe & Tripoli rumours today are true, then Gadaffi might be close to being finished. The latest Tripoli rumour frenzy is that gunfire has been heard from the area of his compound in the Bab Aziziyaa district.

Just saw a tweet saying some sheikh (ah, same as said up there) whatever arrested for siding with protesters (dawkins help the poor fuckers in all these countries who are arrested rather than shot). No reason to believe it is true but info about army crossing over persist, either as truth or disinformation propaganda. This and continuing protester activity in benghazi shows Gaddafi certainly not got it under control.

AJE reporting now confident enough to talk about army defection. I'll watch this maybe instead of type.....

And finally some decent footage of bigger crowds.

Latest from the Al Jaz english language site:

10:30 pm Doctor tells Al Jazeera that merceneries have reached Tripoli. He says that merceneries opened fire on protesters, killing four people. He estimates that around 2000 people were demonstrating. He managed to escape.

Brave people,Godawfulls torturers will be working overtime :(

I'm humbled by their bravery. 2000 bods on a demo facing gunfire. We had 2million on the anti-war demo and couldn't muster more than a bit of pushing and shoving.

Whatever happens Gadaffi is fucked, even if his violent crackdown succeeds, the West will wash their hands of him,he'll be Mad Dog Gadaffi again.

AlJazeera English keep running a piece on the oil factor in Libya, Europe gets quite a lot of oil from there, EU as a whole are by far Libyas biggest customer for oil. Will do some research into the state of Libyas oil industry if I ever get a moment.

Some of the latest videos on this page are rather celebratory in nature:

Obviously cant confirm this myself but

Iyad El-Baghdadi
Head of Zwiya tribe on Aljazeera live from #Tripoli issues ultimatum to #Gaddafi, in 24 hours we'll stop all oil exports from #Libya #Feb27

From Aljazeera. Make of it what you will

About one hour ago, 1500 to 2,000 people gathered and they blocked all roads and they burned anything owned by the government on the way. They are now burning a picture of the president, which is why the noise is so loud and everybody's happy - there's a woman on the balcony singing and screaming and loving it.

"We are in Tripoli, there are chants [directed at Gaddafi]: 'Where are you? Where are you? Come out if you're a man.' I believe we are heading toward Green Square, but to be honest, nobody controls these people and we are just going where we want.

"There are no police, no army, no security forces. Everything is blocked off by protesters - and, as we cross the town - where apartment buildings are filled with people who live here - we are picking people up on the way. Everybody has been waiting for this - and it's finally happening.

To be honest with you, no-one is listening to anything he says any more. Apparently, the son was meant to come out and give a speech - and everybody said, you know: '42 years too late, mate. It's not going to happen now, we're not going to listen to you, you better make your move.'

Among the crowd, we obviously have people here who are pro-government who are trying to spread rumours. Somebody will say: 'Al Jazeera just said that Gaddafi has run away from Libya,' and so everybody thinks: 'Okay, let's go home,' and then they make some calls and find it's just a marketing campaign or something just to make us go home.

But I don't think anyone's ready to go home. To be honest with you now, I don't think these people are after Gaddafi. More than anything else now, they're after blood."

Al Jazeera: How are protesters coordinating? Do you have access to social media networks or the internet?

There is no internet whatsoever - email can be downloaded to offline inboxes, but internet access is down. Skype was working earlier, but I think that has stopped working now.

"As I'm talking to you now, looking left and right, I can see someone is holding a sword, someone else a baseball bat, pieces of wood with nails in it... People now are coming from the other side. I can see a lot of running right now. I'm not sure where they're headed. Wait, now I can see they are surrounding a car. We have seen a lot of cars full of Gaddafi supporters driving round in recent days and shooting at random. Now the crowd of people is attacking the car, beating it."

Obviously cant confirm this myself but

Someone tweeted that AJA were reporting it so checked AJA tweets and found this, well not this, this is what google translated it as.....

Sheikh Faraj cabled: If you did not stop the Libyan regime to crack down on demonstrators will have to prevent the export of oil

Its starting to smell like game over for the regime, if even half of what we are hearing is true.

Here is a translation of what Shaikh AsSadiq Al Gheryani’s said to Al Jazeera Arabic earlier. Powerful stuff. There are some reports that he has been released after his arrest earlier.

This certainly sounds like an option they may try and pull out of the green hat.

We cannot remain silent about this now, the country is being attacked by foreigners right now. Therefore, I extend a call, and would like to ask our brothers from army officers...

A prize to whoever said earlier in the thread that Gaddafi had made a MAJOR mistake bringing in mercenaries.

Are we seeing any footage of Gaddafi soldiers out in numbers? Gaddafi doesn't seem to have much loyalty from the army, if reports of so many army defections are to be believed. And bringing in mercenaries I think suggests that the doesn't and he knew it. Wiki says that there are 119,000 in armed forces but I'm not sure if that includes 'peoples militia'.

Gaddafi has put himself in a corner. I think and hope this will be the Ceaucescu moment of the Arab world.

I think you are right. After this much bloodshed, there is a good chance this will end in his death

Al-Sharq al-Awsat, the Saudi newspaper, quoted sources close to the Gaddafi family as saying they would "die on Libyan soil" rather than give up power like the presidents of Egypt and Tunisia.

Let's hope he get's his wish

The fun continues.

CONFIRMED: City of Benghazi & eastern Libya are no longer under control of the Gadhafi regime. After yesterday's atrocity of machine gun and missile fire killing hundreds of unarmed and peaceful protestors, an entire Libyan commando brigade reportedly switched sides to the protestors, captured the foreign mercenaries responsible for the massacre and have been distributing food, arms and ammunition to the people.
