Just how toe-curlingly awful will the 'festival of Brexit' be?

I've got tickets to the psychedelic whatnot in Woolwich. Theyre free btw
Is that the dream machine thing?

I went to our local one and decided to go straight. I can't say it did much for me, beyond being a bit relaxing and an orange glow with my eyes shut. Others seemed to get more from it.

I'd recommend dropping a load of psychs first.

Yeah it was that... I'm surprised it didn't do anything for you, just that it seemed unavoidable not to get strong visuals... But yeah, any degree of psychedelics would add a lot!
I did ask the host if they had any freak outs, but sadly not! It was surprisingly effective and I'm now curious if theres a home kit available

Chatting to the others after there was only one other person who had a very mild experience. So I must be an outlier with poor imagination :(

((((poor millennials that never got to an average rave))))
(and of course people over 40 with less in the way of excuses ...)

this was brilliant btw - better than i expected - everyone should have a go - basically you experience the star gate section of 2001 with your eyes closed!
yeah I thought it was fun. shame only get half an hour though.
a lot more intense than expected (but that varies per customer). but weird that the effect just completely snaps off in an instant.

I wonder how easy it'd be to set up your own 'dream machine' at home. get a strobe off aliexpress and something to control it speeding up & down in time to your music.

the staff mentioned they're getting regular cancelations or no-shows, so they say it's worth chancing your luck just turning up at the box office if you're around Woolwich for the day anyway.

I did read that you can basically set up the same effects via an app on your phone. Doubt it’s quite the same impact

I’m 40 and I’ve never been to a rave! I wouldn’t know how to even find one. I’ve had my fair share of mash ups down the years but at house parties. Reckon dream machine is my best bet

when i was a kid i would listen to my greatest hits of house tape and turn a desk lamp on and off in my face with my eyes shut < true story!! :D

I see what you mean about Woolwich ska invita - One side of the road M&S simply food & new high rise flats for city workers - the other side of the road well it’s how I remember Woolwich. economic and social apartheid either side of the dual carriageway :(

Anyway - I actually got a lot out of it. For me it was a mixture of things - lots of trippy spirals and helixes, at times it felt like there were people walking past me, like I was stopped in the centre of crowds (like that scene in the Matrix I think), I saw lots of flashing reds and blues; an image a bit like the Manx Flag spinning like a Catherine wheel. Every know and then I would see symbols (mathematical, tarot, random characters) pulsing in and out of the flashing lights)

It reminded me a bit of coming up on a pill, a bit of the time I took mushrooms, a bit like the backgrounds of that PlayStation futuristic racing game Wipeout, and a bit like those plugins you could get for Winamp back in 2001 or so that gave you flashing lights / visuals - I recall one called “Acid Spunk” and that springs to mind.

Edit - and obviously it’s far greater than the sum of it’s parts as I’ve described them

I couldn’t put this into pictures, I’m (slightly) better with words. Everyone else with seemed to be much more artistic than me at the reflection zone.

Anyway a marvellous experience and quite unique. If I lived in London I’d be finding a way to try and do it again

Tbf there's nothing wrong with spending money on public arts, probably better value for money than the opera, and 66 million is every single person in the UK. The DreamWorks thing I went to only sat 40 people at a time so not sure if bigger numbers were ever realistic

The problem seems to have been most people not knowing about it tbh - this guy quotes some polling saying only 9% of people were even aware it was happening.

For £120 million, they ought to have been.

Also worth pointing out that the figure given of 230,000 is for only four of the events, not for the entire festival as everyone seems to be reporting.

(this is because the DCMS haven't supplied figures for the other events, which doesn't particularly bode well for them but y'know)
