Go on then. Make the case for the Irish. It will be paper thin.
With the exception of literature and music and even then most of the prominent Irish writers came from an anglo-Irish (protestant) background and those who were catholics were outcasts (at least while alive).
Even in the diaspora, where Irish people have been prominent in Pop music (everyone from The Beatles onwards) the Irish have tended to express themselves artistically (and emotionally) rather than intellectually.
1. Nobody is suggesting they are.
2. And the descendants of those european peasants now occupy (apparently) 20-odd percent of places at Ivy league Universities - something the WASPs would have found inconceivable 80 years ago.

A few years ago in the US, on the back of Colin Powell's rise, the was a load of chatter about the rise of the Jewmaicans. The US just attracts a lot of pushy aspirant immigrants. I remember Arthur Miller saying that Americans from every conceivable immigrant background would tell him Death of a Salesman was their story.

You and the author of the article would make fine - though simplistic - bed-fellows.
I think you might find that many of these 'pushy aspirant immigrants' (especially Jews and Irish people) were escaping starvation and persecution rather than looking to enhance their stock portfolios
So show me the heavyweight intellectual (as opposed to artistic) tradition of Irish people? and I don't mean Protestant free-thinkers, I mean catholic ones. You can't, cos there isn't one.
Of course Ireland was once an intellectual beacon for Europe. But that was a long time ago.
There are, of course, many historical and social reasons for this. One of which is undoubtedly the influence of the Catholic Church in promoting a culture of acquiesence over centuries.

I read somewhere - though I now can't remember where - that ethnic quota-type policies at American universities started long ago, not in any attempt to increase the representation of any oppressed group or promote 'diversity', but to limit the number of places that would otherwise have been won by Jews. WASPs grumbled that Jews were winning too many places on merit. Though the term 'affirmative action' was not invented until later, the reality was introduced to help less studious or less clever WASP youth facing Jewish competition for places at the top universities.

Especially true when it is a life and death choice like the Irish famine or the Highland clearances. But in calmer times even if you a living in grinding poverty and keeping your head down from the Cossacks or Black and Tans, most people endure it, migrate to large cities or peaceful neighbouring countries. Giving up everything to cross the Atlantic in a rusty tub was still a drastic ambtious venture, unless you were being invited through campaigns.

Well we live under a government that is spying on all of our online communications, wants to censor political content it disagrees with and is forcing people with cancer on chemotherapy to attend unnecessary medical assessment that cause massive stress and anxiety in order to line the pockets of their mates. What we really need a good chat about is Jewish IQs though. Phrenology next?
