Mr Purnell has previously said that the plans to cut drug addicts' benefits would give them the chance to "turn their lives around".

Someone has to fill all those privately run PFI titan prisons, its clear that desperate addicts and alcoholics will be a big part of thier clientele...

btw, I have given up doing welfare stuff/issue, the lack of support from the Left, civil society, etc has been a major sadness and disappointment and tbh, the speed and acceptance of what once would have been seen as barbaric beggars belief, the recession has founds its scapegoats..

Liberty has deliberately excluded welfare, etc in its portfolio of issues it will take up, the forthcorming Convention on Modern Liberty has nothing on economic and social rights. This LD stuff and forcing clamants to undertake CBT etc is indeed a civil liberties issue


RE: David Freud and the Tories, i suspect we are going to a see a 'big bang' approach to welfare similar to the 80's one on privatisation, etc, sadly the media inc the BBC have prepared the way for this with its coverage of 'scroungers', fiddlers', etc.

Well, lets be grateful David Fraud isn't part of the labour party, and what the tories say, has no effect on policies, while they are only shadow cabinet.

A Sunday Express investigation has revealed that Mr Purnell submitted rent claims of up to £2,020 each month – yet bank records prove that he paid only £910 every month.

I think this story may come back to haunt him.

Last week local newspapers were issued with a picture which showed Mr Purnell standing alongside his Labour colleagues, who had already left the hospital by the time that the minister's photograph was taken.

Hospital bosses insisted that Mr Purnell had agreed to the idea of merging the pictures. But his aides say he interpreted "merging" as meaning two separate pictures would run alongside each other.

But the row deepened last night following the intervention of two Labour MPs who were in the photograph.

Tom Levitt, the MP for High Peak, said that the idea of merging the images "was raised as a possibility" on the day. He also said that the group posed so "as to leave a space for James".

His party colleague David Heyes also recalled the manipulation of the photograph being discussed and said that he and the rest of the party had posed for several photographs, each with a gap for Mr Purnell.

"I remember we did one on the stairs and that also had a space for James."
