Not that I want for a minute to be seen to be speaking in support of someone who looks like a bit of a chinless wonder...but there's an old saying which I think is applicable here: "you don't have to eat dogshit to know it's nasty". I don't think that it is an essential prequalification for someone to care about the poor and downtrodden that they have necessarily been poor and downtrodden themselves.
If we could only ever speak about things we'd had personal in-depth experience of, Urban for one would be a much quieter place.
Not that having first-hand experience doesn't help...but then there's also a counter-argument that says that sometimes it's harder to have a broad view on a subject that is too close to home.
