Two German embassy staff missing in Iraq

BERLIN (Reuters) - The German Foreign Ministry says two German security officials have gone missing while travelling from Jordan to Germany's embassy in Baghdad, but there are no signs of kidnapping.

A spokeswoman confirmed a report by ZDF television on Saturday that the two men, aged 38 and 25, had disappeared while en route to Baghdad "several days ago". "But there are no indications they have been kidnapped," she said. She did not provide any further details.

Anyone noticed how the US 'took' Kut yesterday? Well now they say that the militia control 40-60% of it. Reminds me of Um-Qasr and how many times that fell.

Oh look, its just a few frustrated Iraqi civilians taking pot shots at our troops with their guns...nothing to worry about...... ermm hello?

Fierce Overnight Fighting North Of Baghdad

In Baqouba, several American soldiers were wounded in the fighting, which began with simultaneous rocket attacks late Friday on an Iraqi police station, the governor's office and a compound housing the U.S. military's civil affairs office, said Capt. Issam Bornales, spokesman for the 1st Infantry Division's 3rd Brigade.

The assailants opened fire with rocket-propelled grenades and rifles against the targets, sparking small fires in each location. Fighting quickly spread throughout the city of 26,000 people.

"This was a well-coordinated attack in certain areas, but in others just ordinary frustrated people seemed to come out and take some shots at American soldiers," Bornales said. "It's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff." http://framehosting.dowjonesnews.com/sample/samplestory.asp?StoryID=2004041009270000&Take=1

Marine in 'Fall of Baghdad' Photo Injured

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A Marine from Indiana whose smiling, cigar-smoking image helped symbolize the fall of Baghdad a year ago suffered severe head injuries in fighting this week in the besieged Iraqi city of Fallujah.

Gunnery Sgt. Nick Popaditch, 36, of Terre Haute, marked Friday's one-year anniversary of the fall at a U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany. Surgeons removed a piece of shrapnel that lodged near his optic nerve when a rocket-propelled grenade slammed into his tank Tuesday in Fallujah, his wife said Friday.

"He had to have his right eye removed. He's very concerned about that," April Popaditch said from Twentynine Palms, Calif., where her husband is based. http://www.wjla.com/headlines/0404/138521.html

Meanwhile Australian TV has shown pictures of a man, apparently American, taken hostage by fighters outside Falluja after an attack on a convoy taking fuel to US troops. The report said the attack took place on the main highway from Baghdad to Falluja on Friday.

UK Defense Secy Sees 'Steady Progress On Rebuilding Iraq'

LONDON (AP)--Life in Iraq is "measurably better" than it was a year ago despite this week's escalating violence, U.K. Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon said Saturday. Hoon told British Broadcasting Corp. radio that since the fall of Saddam Hussein, significant work had been done to restore schools and hospitals and create jobs.

"Overall there is actually steady progress on rebuilding Iraq," Hoon said. The situation in large parts of the country "is measurably better than it was 12 months ago and when it was under Saddam Hussein," he added.

Blasts in Baghdad

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Several blasts rang out across central Baghdad on Saturday and a column of smoke rose from near the heavily fortified "Green Zone" where the U.S.-led administration in Iraq is based, Reuters witnesses said.
The Green Zone has been attacked several times in recent months with mortars and rockets, and by a suicide bomber who blew up his vehicle at one of its entrances.

Iraq group says has 30 foreign hostages

Sat 10 April, 2004 13:49

DUBAI (Reuters) - An Iraqi group says in footage aired by an Arab TV station it is holding 30 foreign hostages and threatened to decapitate them unless U.S. forces lifted their blockade of the town of Falluja.

"We are calling for the withdrawal of American and coalition forces. We have Japanese, Bulgarian, Israeli, American, Spanish and Korean hostages. Their numbers are 30," a masked man holding a Kalashnikov rifle said in the broadcast on Saturday.

"If America doesn't lift its blockade of Falluja their heads will be cut off," he said. The footage did not show any of the alleged hostages. http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=491656&section=news

[3] APPEAL FROM EWA JASIEWICZ

Iraq Solidarity Action Resist the Massacre in Falluga

Urgent information and appeal from Ewa Jasiewicz, who worked with Voices
in the Wilderness and Occupation Watch in Iraq, lived there for 8 months
(Basra and Baghdad) and in Palestine, mainly Jenin camp for 6 months,
speaks Arabic, and who got back from Iraq 2 months ago. She is in regular
contact with her friends in Basra and Baghdad.

I just spoke to friends in Baghdad - Paola Gaspiroli, Italian, from
Occupation watch and Bridges to Baghdad, Journalist Leigh Gordon,
England, (NUJ, Tribune, Mail on Sunday) and a Palestinian friend with
family in Falluja and friends in the Iraqi Islamic Party. Both he and
Leigh have been ferrying out the injured from Falluja to Baghdad for the
past three days. Ambulances have been barred from entry into the
blood-drenched city.

Here is their news, which they told me over the telephone tonight
(Friday)

PAOLA:

There has been a massacre in Falluga. Falluga is under siege. 470 people
have been killed, and 1700 injured. There has been no ceasefire. They
(Americans) told people to leave, said they have 8 hours to leave and
people began to leave but they're trapped in the Desert. The Americans
have been bombing with B52s (Confirmed also by Leigh in an email three
days ago). Bridges to Baghdad are pulling out. We have flights booked out
of Amman. Tomorow a team will go to Sadr City to deliver medicines. 50
people have been killed there. ?? (Forgotten name) the 'elastic' shiekh
in Sadr City (I've met him, young, brilliant guy, describes himself as
'elastic' because he is so flexible when it comes to his interpretations
of Islam and moral conduct definitions etc, he's pretty liberal) he has
told me I should leave. He says that even he can't control his people.
Foreigners are going to be targeted. 6 new foreigners have been taken
hostage. Four of them are Italian security firm employees - they were
kidnapped from their car, which was found to be full of weapons, and
there were black uniforms. Baghdad was quiet today except for Abu Ghraib
(West Baghdad, where a vast prison is located and is bursting at the
seams with 12,000 prisoners) an American convoy was attacked there and 9
soldiers were injured and 27 were kidnapped. Thats right 27. None of the
newswires are reporting it though. And I heard this from (*name best not
to supply without permission). Its really really bad. They (Americans)
have been firing on Ambulances, snipers are following the ambulances,
they cannot get in.

Falluga, there are people in the Desert, they've left Falluga but they're
not being allowed into Baghdad, they're trapped in the Dessert, they're
like refugees, its terrible but the people, Iraqi people are giving all
they can; theyre bringing supplies, everybody is giving all their help
and support to Falluga.

I want to stay but I have to go, if I want to come back and be useful,
you know I think its best to leave, Bridges to Baghdad has decided this.
Its getting really dangerous for Italians. We feel like were being
targeted now. (Italy has a 2500+ force including Carabinieri occupying
Nassiriyah which has been subject to a number of resistance attacks
including the devastating attack on the Police station which claimed the
lives of 4 soldiers, one civilian, one documentary film maker, 12
Carabinieri police and 8 Iraqis).

() and Leigh have been great. Theyve been driving into Falluga and
bringing out people, going back and forth. They know whats going on,
really they have been great. They want more people to help them but we
couldnt from here. Its getting much much worse.

EWA: My friend whos been in Falluga today and for the past few days:

Weve been seeing it with our own eyes. People were told to leave Falluga
and now there are thousands trapped in the Desert. There is a 13 km long
convoy of people trying to reach Baghdad. The Americans are firing bombs,
everything, everything they have on them. They are firing on Families!
They are all children, old men and women in the dessert. Other Iraqi
people are trying to help them. In Falluga they (Americans) have been
bombing hospitals. Children are being evacuated to Baghdad. There is a
child now, a baby, he had 25 members of his family killed, hes in the
hospital and someone needs to be with him, why isnt anyone there to stay
with him, he just lost 25 from his family!??? The Americans are dropping
cluster bombs and new mortars, which jump 3-4 metres. They are bombing
from the air. There are people lying dead in the streets. They said
thered be a ceasefire and then they flew in, I saw them, and they began
to bomb. They are fighting back and they are fighting well in Falluga.
But we are expecting the big attack in 24-48 hours. It will be the main
attack. They will be taking the town street by street and searching and
attacking. They did this already in a village near-by, I forget the name,
but they will be doing this in Falluja. Please get help, get people to
protest, get them to go to the Embassies, get them out, get them to do
something. There is a massacre. And we need foreigners, the foreigners
can do something. We are having a protest, Jo (Jo Wilding
www.wildfirejo.org.uk) and the others from her group are coming to the
American checkpoint tomorrow. We havent slept in 3 or 4 days. We need
attention. I have photos, film, weve given it to Al jazeera, Al Arabiya
but get it out too. Do everything you can. We are going back in tomorrow.

LEIGH GORDON: Its kicking off. Come by all means but me and (..)
probably wont be around. I mean theyre going to crazy. () is saying
for foreigners to come but its not safe. Sheikh . from Falluga said he
couldnt guarantee my safety. I mean its going to go crazy, I think
foreigners will start getting killed soon I mean people are going to
start getting desperate, when theyve seen their mother father, house,
cat, dog, everything bombed theyre going to start to attack. They
(Americans) have said this operations only going to last 5 days its
drawing to an end. They need to free up troops on other fronts breaking
out all over the country. Theyre going to go in for the kill. Theres no
way of guaranteeing anybodys safety. I think you can be useful but its
not like you can just not tell your mum and think youll be back in a
week. Were probably going to get killed tomorrow. Come, but we might not
be here.

EWA:

What to Do

This is an appeal to the anti-war movement, to the peace movement,
eco-action movement, animal rights movement, anti-fascists, everybody
active, everybody who can respond, can call a demo, can organise a
protest, an office occupation, an embassy storming, a road blockade, mass
civil disobedience, industrial shut-down, work-place occupation,
solidarity work stoppage, blockade the US Embassy, Fairford Military Base
action campaign whats taking off at Fairford? Are B52s being deployed?
Shannon Peace Camp protestors are there new movements at Shannon? We
need to address this, we need to resist this. We become the solidarity
resistance in Iraq by taking action in our neighbourhoods and in our
cities. Print up a leaflet. Paint up a banner. Take to the streets. Only
a small group can make a change. Show people in Iraq that we are standing
by them. 700 more British troops have been flown in to quell the uprising
in the South. No Pasaran. Take to the embassies, the bases, the US
interests, the streets.

End the Massacre in Fallujah - Paola Gaspiroli

April 9 2004

470 killed.
1200 injured, of which 243 are women and 200 are children.
This is the first, underestimated body count from Fallujah.

Since fighting escalated at the beginning of the week, Iraqi people,
especially in the city of Fallujah, are facing a humanitarian disaster.
Occupation Forces have laid siege to the city. More than 470 people have
been killed, 1200 injured. Dead bodies are lying in the streets.

Ambulances are being shot at by snipers. Medical aid and supplies have
been stopped by US Occupation Forces. Aid workers delivering supplies can
only take secondary roads into the city; once they arrived, they found
themselves under fire from US snipers.
No humanitarian corridor has been allowed to be put in place.

A cease-fire was announced and people began trying flee, but US troops
began to attack again and many people remain trapped inside the city.
Now, refugees trying to escape from Fallujah to Baghdad are being
prevented from reaching their destination by US military. They form a
column that extends over 10 kilometers of highway.

The thousands of families who remain trapped in Fallujah are running out
of basic necessities like food and potable water. Hospitals and medical
staff are overwhelmed, and are asking desperately for blood, oxygen and
antiseptics.

Fighting is spreading all over the country, and the situation in Southern
cities – Nasiriyah, Najaf, Kut – is unknown to us, but they are also
feared to be the sights of humanitarian emergencies.

The international community, the United Nations and the European
Community
cannot remain spectators to the massacre in Falluja and the terrorization
of Iraqi people all over the country. Al-Sadr City has also been attacked
and paid a high price with almost 100 casualties. Other towns may be
facing similar horrors. The war that was to bring liberty and democracy
to the Iraqi people has unmasked itself.

The international community should take a firm position and demand that
Coalition troops respect international conventions and allow for a
humanitarian corridor through which refugees can safely escape, and
medical supplies can reach Falluja.

Stop the massacre.
Stop attacking civilians.
End the siege of Fallujah.

Suppy line attacks

In Baghdad, an Iraqi was killed on Saturday when a US tank opened fire at a group of citizens trying to protect al-Rawda al-Kadhimiya (Imam Kadhim shrine) in Baghdad, according to Aljazeera's correspondent.

Also, a US Abrams tank and a trailer truck were on fire after two separate attacks near Baghdad airport on Saturday. The tank was left burning at al-Adil crossroad on the way to the airport, he said. US troops cordoned off the area, preventing journalists from approaching.

Nearby, a trailer truck, which was part of a US military convoy, was hit earlier on Saturday by a rocket-propelled grenade, witnesses said. Other reports said the truck had been hit by a roadside bomb.

I'm guessing that the 'Leigh Gordon' quoted in Ginger's post above is the same person Jon Snow was interviewing on C4 news yesterday evening (and who I referred to as 'Lee Gordon' on the previous page) it will be interesting to hear what else he has to say in the event that he survives the next day or two.

I notice current headlines are mostly about hostages, cease-fires and 'the need to be resolute', but do not seem to have much to say about the US actions around Fallujah, the emerging situation there or the impact on Iraqi civilians.

Channel 4 showing film showing US soldiers helmets on the floor and pools of blood, but no bodies. Locals say 5 were killed - can't find another report of this anywhere.

"There is a battle we have to fight, a struggle we have to win and it is happening now in Iraq," he wrote

Ooh, look, there's that royal we... he's not sendinding Ewan out to the eastern front is he?

Or I wonder if he means us the people of the nation who opposed his bloody adventure in our millions in the first place... nah, it can't be... can it?

Fox have reported that the American that was kidnapped is actually an employee of a subsidiary of Haliburton. Georgie boy will not be impressed that they caught one of his fundraisers.
Fox Story

There are reports of several explosions across Baghdad in the last few minutes, probably mortar fire.

:( Hearts and minds boys, hearts and minds......

In Baghdad, witnesses said U.S. troops used tanks to smash their way into the compound of a Sunni mosque and Koranic school in a night raid on the Adhamiya district, where teenage gunmen fought running street battles with the Americans on Saturday.

"They (U.S. soldiers) came in from this door, 20 or more of them," resident Falah Fadil Mahmud told Reuters.

"They used knives to rip open the bags full of beans and flour, and kicked over oil cans. They took lots of water and boxes of milk for the children." The goods had been collected to help Falluja victims.

The U.S. military had no immediate comment on the raid. http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=4797837&section=news

This is worth the read - Unfortunately most of the stuff coming out of Iraq is rehashed crap. THis piece is from inside Fallujah

Last month the Americans distributed leaflets in Falluja that showed a pair of eyes, with an Arabic inscription reminding the people of Falluja that they were being watched. They did not need to be told.

In the past week the area around Falluja has been turned inside out. The clandestine groups are now in charge. Our translator, who was briefly kidnapped by a resistance group outside the city, described being taken to a series of commanders working in a loose hierarchy.

When we drove from Baghdad to Ramadi on the back roads south of Falluja on Wednesday, the Americans appeared to have almost given up large areas of the countryside. At a small checkpoint near the edge of the desert, a group of eight or so marines looked bewildered.

'I've never seen anything like this,' said one. 'We told [our officers] to get us out of here. There were three mortar rounds on the first night and 12 last night. Every time we move, they are right on top of us - they are getting better.'

Id just like to point out that for the last 2 days or so Ive not seen one report detailing the action down in Basra, Amara, Hut......the last report I read said that a UK Soldier had been killed, but nothing since then.

One report went on to state (from the CPA) that the US had 're-taken Hut' - then another said they had 40-60% of Hut.......since then, nothing. Its almost as if everywhere else has stopped fighting and returned to 'normality'
