In need of my Saturday evening subtitles : Inspector Montalbano.

yardbird

Understands love.
R.I.P.
Wallander's over, so BBC4 was running this.
French, Swedish, Dutch, even German, I can get into quite quickly and not realise that I'm reading subtitles, but Italian is so frantic.
The vocal delivery is 1000 words an hour and is so straining, still I'll persevere. I now started watching Inspector Montalgano on iplayer.
Gonna take a rest and then try later :)

I didn't much care for this. Strained 'comedic' moments. I saw it through to the end, but I won't be bothering again.

It's actually pretty good when you can pick up on the regional based humour. It's not your usual detective type stuff and is well worth sticking with.

It's a cliche, but the characters really unfold over the what is it 12 or so series now, the first few are of course a bit more uptight and not yet comfortable with it being character rather than plot driven - do give it/them another chance.

It's obv. not the usual dour detective, northern European fare, whether British, Swedish or more recently Danish.

The BBC's efforts to engage with other cultures (The Number One Detective Agency, Zen) have produced ... mixed results. Interesting to see how the locals do it. This felt very.... Italian, for some reason.

I saw the BBC started another showing of the Danish original of The Killing last night - the programme almost needs its own channel at this point.

OK, you've convinced me!

Presumably that means The Killing 2 is about to start.

I saw a Montelbano at Christmas and quite enjoyed it. Is the BBC showing the whole thing now?

Well, they're powering through the first one at one per night on BBC 3 or 4 (reminiscent of the way BBC2 scheduled The Wire). Have to think there is a reason....

It's a little bizarre atm as the BBC are currently about to show the third hour of the Danish S1 (presumably Mon to Thurs), and C4 are about to show the sixth hour of the US S1 (at the rate of once a week)....

I managed about 5 minutes - it was rather on the camp side. I prefer "damaged" detectives, but I can't even take that much Wallander.

The electronics communications references always age these things so quickly ..

I like the Montalbano books (although the last two have been a bit disappointing). When I saw that the TV Montalbano was completely different to how I'd imagined him, I stopped watching and have never seen an entire episode. I'll probably watch them all in a few years (or download them directly into my brain, or something).

Also I already have a favourite Italian detective. A Venetian called Commissario Guido Brunetti, who is a hard act to follow.

Donna Leon? Are the books worth reading then?
Ooh! The food descriptions! I'm amazed you haven't read any. I was really surprised that they weren't translated from the Italian but they're written in English. Donna Leon won't allow an Italian translation because of the Mafia or something.

...and they were recommended by a former head of English (retired) who has never recommended a dud book. I devoured every one in the school library and then ordered the others from Amazon (which I then donated to the school so they have a full set). That's how good I think they are.

...and I appear to be the person in the Northern hemisphere not to have seen The Killing. Waiting for episode 9 with bated breath. I really hope Theis & Vagn don't kill Rama. I think he's making his last ever phone call
I think the killer is Vagn myself. I think he held her in the house when Pernille & Theis took the boys to the seaside. I keep asking myself why the fuck they haven't searched the house yet. It's obvious. You start with family and all those close to them and work outwards. Lund has asked Meyer to get files of all disappeared young women....I think Vagn will tie in with them

I really enjoy Inspector Montalbano, I didn't at first but have grown to love the characters and would love to go a see where it is filmed.

It was great to see the inspector back last night for the comedic characters, the beautiful views of Sicily Etc.
One reservation; the new Livia; we are not keen.
