It was great to see the inspector back last night for the comedic characters, the beautiful views of Sicily Etc.
One reservation; the new Livia; we are not keen.

I reckon montalbano only goes out with women called livia and so while the name stays the same the woman changes

After I'd got over my disappointment that Livia hadn't regenerated as a man I quite enjoyed the one shown last night.

Worth noting that this is only on the BBC iplayer for a week, until next Saturday, rather than the more usual four weeks.

It is quite soporific - I find all subtitled telly has that tendency but this more so because of the gentle pace and preponderance of dialogue - that's also why I like it so much

Is the series on at the moment older than the Young Montalbano? It looks like its shot at the same sort of time by the same team but with different actors. For me this is pleasant non-challenging viewing and not comparable at all to scandi-noir crime stuff. I agree it seems to be very italian/cicilian. Gentle pace, not a great deal happening other than strolling around chatting. eating out and recurring humour themes. Every time I watch it I think 'I would love to be there'.

I understand the original was pleased with the way it turned out, which is a bonus.

The current series consists of this year's and 2016's RAI series (they only broadcast two at a time), filmed the late spring prior to each broadcast (interiors completed in the respective summers).

I'll be 'there' in an hour or two...

Last night's episode had Uncle Junior Soprano in it. Great plot. But I think Junior was overdubbed into Italian (with sporadic English phrases). I wonder why? Was it dubbed for export, or for home consumption?

Anyway, all 34 episodes are now on iplayer for the next 10 months. RAI will broadcast a new series (possibly the penultimate, I guess) starting on 9th March - 3 new episodes.

For home consumption. Everything English language gets dubbed in Italy and if an foreign actor doesn't speak good enough Italian, they will dub him over. Until not too long ago, sound didn't even get recorded for Italian films, so used were audiences to dubbing. Everything got post synchronised and even now they will probably often ADR/dub a lot of scenes for italian shows when the dialogue isn't clear enough, even if the dialogue is in Italian.

I think that's where the actors deliver the lines in their native language and then get dubbed . I remember Livia, Monty's girlfriend in earlier episodes was played by a British actor and her lips were moving in english.

I wondered if Junior had been subtitled in Italy but dubbed for English speaking audiences. But then I remembered Italy is big on dubbing. There’s voice actors who play big names on successive films for years.

I seem to remember an actor telling a chat show host about meeting an Italian actor who kept enquiring about his health and work plans. The Italian guy’s career depended on the actor not dying or retiring.

I’ve read 10 of the books. Not sure how many there are. In the books he has hair. Which is weird.
