The UK [and other some other] European democracies are walking blindly down the path towards populist authoritarianism and the US has a tiny blip-of-a-chance to roll things back a wee bit before the 2022 midterms (when the senate falls to Trumps GOP).

.)But that said, please don't try to conflate the - decade-long-term - drift (and admittedly rapidly accelerating,) threats to any democratic accountability that you're currently undergoing in your own, particular jurisdiction ... with the rapid imposition of fascism on one of the most international, free and progressive cities (regions,) anywhere on the planet.

Freedoms are being eroded in "the West". And attention needs to be paid to these dangers - with Hong Kong as an example, a bellwether, a canary in the coalmine - but have no doubt ... it is coming your way too.

Samuel Bickett's case is worth following.
A 37 y/o American Hongkonger and corporate lawyer specialising in financial compliance, public corruption and economic sanctions.
He was leaving an MTR station when, on the exit stairs, he witnessed an older male in jeans, trainers, tee-shirt and jacket shouting/arguing and harassing/assaulting a young person with a metal baton. He intervened, demanding to know what was going on and was threatened and then attacked by the aggressor. He repeatedly asked: "Are you PoPo? Are you PoPo? Are you PoPo?" (PoPo is local slang for police. Everyone knows this. Everyone.)
The assailant repeatedly denied being a police officer and Bickett proceeded to attempt to disarm him of his baton. During this scuffle, the cop finally declared that he was a cop and Bickett let him go. The cop then arrested Bickett for assaulting a police officer. This is all captured on video with sound.
At trial, he plead not guilty. Where is the mens rea - the intent to commit the crime? The aggressor with the metal baton repeatedly denied being a cop. As far as Bickett is concerned, he intervened in the assault of a young member of the public by an older assailant.
The magistrate found him guilty and sentenced him to 4 1/2 months imprisonment. He appealed and spent nearly two months in jail before being released on appeal.
(Edited to add [ETA]: Of course his employer, Bank of America Merrill Lynch [BAML], fired him.)
Anyway ... his appeal is being heard tomorrow, Monday 15th November 2021.
