Gambing is far worse than smoking. Smoking can't legally be advertised. The same rules should be applied to gambling.

As I said upthread, the reason they spend so much money on advertising is to normalise gambling, they wish to create a world where watching a football match is without pleasure unless there’s a wager on it. And they’ve been pretty successful in doing that.

BBC showing their ideological underpinning there, saying she “earned” a salary of £421m.

It irks me the same way but they, and the media in general, just seem to use it to mean “obtained without obvious lawbreaking”.

If you were to apply a Marxist analysis to every story like this you’d be tilting at every other use of the word.

I always see a “wager” as when you have a bet with your mate over some dumb argument in the pub. Not something we do any more now that everyone has smart phones.

Loads of these “gambling” sites aren’t even relating to things like football matches - there are so many rigged “roulette” or similar (or much worse) games which are just neurological capture systems which their victims carry in their pockets.

Yep. See also "worth". As in "he/she is worth £2.5bn". They really aren't.

It does seem that making betting an integral part of the enjoyment of sport is a good hook to get people on to the online 'slots' and so on, whole thing just normalises what was once a fairly niche (and grubby) activity.

They could just say “she was paid £421m” though. Every word chosen is a decision, whether conscious or otherwise!

If it’s just common parlance, it’s not so much a decision as something in the general cultural background. Also, if she is actually running the company, “she was paid” implies a kind of passivity that is misleading.

I'm banned from Bet365. They don't let you bet if you aren't regularly losing a certain amount. I wasn't regularly winning, I just didn't put on a bet that often and when they sent me a free bet (£100) I ignored it. So they banned me.

People are generally 'paid' dividends. She has apparently 'earned' hers.

Words matter.

Exactly. I don't know why the BBC are doing this tbh. They are fucked. The Tory attack dogs have been given their y-fronts and they will tear the knackers off the place sooner or later. So why not go out frothing?

She "scammed" half a billion out of her punters?

A lot more was “scammed” if she saw half a billion of it.

I don’t have much of a problem with sports betting, but they also do loads of those slot games and basically “FOBT in your pocket” shit.

Would be interested to know where most of their profits come from.

What did they claim was the reason they banned you?

They said that they were constantly updating their something or other and I wasn't blah de blah. Can't remember. It was something about not fitting in with the business model lol.

Ah, right. If it was just basic inactivity, that’s understandable. “Not losing enough regularly enough” is quite different obv.

That’s why I like your old style bookies - walk in, do your biz with cash, walk out. Not easy for them to track who was winning/losing what and how much. Means they have to do their actual job, which is keeping a book of bets.

Instead, you get the boilerplate “we regret to inform you that your betting behaviour is incompatible with our neural exploitation template” letter.

Is there anyone still there with that much fight left in them?

FOBT were by far the main profit maker for bookies before the reduction in stake from £100 to £2.

The figure bandied about is 40% of their profits.

Here are some bookies whinging about the reduction, while admitting it hasn't hit them quite as hard as they claimed it would when they were lying to parliament about the thousands of job losses it would (and didn't) cause*.

*Yes it led to some. Nowhere near the amount claimed beforehand though.
