going for a vaccine? look up your nhs number

I got turned away from my actual appointment for not having the number on me, and had to go back and jump another day's queue, which I felt guilty about. It meant my earmarked dose didn't get used on me (I hope it got used for someone else) and I got one I shouldn't have had. I only hope it was literally a drop in the ocean. Anyway I wholeheartedly endorse this thread

They could give us all chips at birth that could be read like they do with pets - no more worry about remembering your NHS number or NINO...

The NHS number may be expired on those old cards.
I discovered when I got my ancient NHS card out that mine was defunct, and there is now a completely new numbering system.

May not be true in every case, but worth checking to make sure!

yes

my old number was in the style ABCDE 12, I have found something with my new number which is in the style 123 456 7890

That's definitely worth the warning Stig !!

I've literally never compared the number on the old card to the number on more recent hospital letters .... usually too busy with beer etc.! :p

Can't remember my new NHS number but can remember the old one abcd 123 style. I can remember my NI number and my driver's license number but that's probably more down to being able to remember how to work it out.

When were the numeric-only NHS numbers launched? I can't remember alphanumeric ones.

I've still got my NINO plastic card somewhere that I was sent around the age of 15 or so.

Wiki says they started giving the new style nhs numbers to new born babies in 1995 and everyone else a few years later.
I must have been before then. I left the army in late '94 and when I tried to register at a local gp they couldn't deal with the old alphanumeric NHS number.

I didn't get asked for my NHS number when I had the jab yesterday - asked for my name and DOB, and gave me a card with a sticker on with my details (NHS number, DOB and appointment time).

Found a 2006 nhs number card so same number.
It was in the magic box, which also has my NINO card, my international certificate of vaccinations (all fully expired about 4 years ago) some old passprts and a friend certificate of exemption from French military service dating back to 1993 amongst various other things.
stoopeed hoarder me

I think the old NHS number might be on birth certificates? I can remember my old one after the prompting from this thread though probably haven’t thought about it for 30 years! Whichever official document or card I had it written down was handwritten so never sure if it was a ‘C’ or ‘G’.

I’ve recently memorised my modern number as I’m having to input it twice weekly when I do my lateral flow tests for work. I can’t remember being asked for it when I went for my jab.
