Glastonbury 2007 pt2: the festie!

Some genius came up with advertising the idea that "leaving your tent behind was good for Africa". Not quite what the orginisers were saying but it was pretty obvious that that is what alot of the punters were hearing.
I'm not sure Africa would want some of the trashed tents I saw left behind.

Erm. That's because we went to see her but only saw the last song!

Ohj yes, but we caught more than just her last didn't we??

Saw that you mentioned the circus earlier. How could you call the great Dave 'some fella on a unicycle' :D

DAVE! I had forgotten ... somehow ;)

Eight hours of drinking and smoking on Sunday may account for thet ...:D

i'm so jealous Skim.

was she fantastic?

She was fucking monumental. I thought she'd mainly stick to songs from the new album, but instead she reeled through classics from each album. It wasn't far off what my fantasy Bjork setlist would be – Hyperballad, Alarm Call, Pagan Poetry...

By the time she finished with Declare Independence, my jaw was dropping off the floor :D

it's possible you and jtg were at a different festival to me :D

yeah quite possibly, yours looked like much more fun.

i realise that my last 12 hours on site deteriorated rapidly and has left me feeling a bit down on the whole thing, but i didnt particularly enjoy it, it wasnt the punters completely, the staff had enough attitude to put a dampener on it on their own.

we look for different things in a festival and i spent most of this one very lonely. i kept waiting for it to kick in and everything to feel right but actually i spent a lot of time trudging by myself feeling completely disconnected with it all failing to find anybody to talk to. i felt like i had to no down time, no time to relax and piratically nobody to do it with.

at one point i stood with a man looking at the river running through his tent from the water point where people were happily putting the tap on full to wash the mud off their wellies in the driving rain. people just didnt seem to care about anything but themselves.

i'm glad everyone else didnt have the same experience as me but that doesnt make mine any less valid.

And the sound was good - at least it was where we were. The Other stage is usually a bit flaky, cos it's flat and open and the wind pushes the sound around, but Bjork's set was really clean and punchy.

(Trash City now much more fun than LV, which is on its last legs IMO)

Agreed. I only managed a brief wander to Trash City on Saturday night, but it was a lot more fun than LV, which didn't have much spark for me this time round.

the idea was that you tied it all up and left it with the campsite crew, not that you just got out and buggered off.

well LV shut down on Wednesday when Roy had a strop with Eavis over precisely fuck all, and from thereon in it was all downhill. Some of the worst mud - not their fault, admittedly, the same stuff as ever but with bigger queues and less chance of getting in. I've got friends involved with LV, indeed i've done stuff with them myself and i love what they are / were about, but it did all seem dead tired this year...

i haver never liked LV but trash city was great :) my only random conversation was about how great it was and why was LV even still going?

i think some people are being too hard on the punters and failing to factor in the depleting effect the weather can have, as others have said. It is hard to keep up your spirits in the worst of it, it can make people fractious and even a bit panicky (like the poor sods getting stuck in the worst log-jams)... course there were some twats, but i think the sheer effort involved made things seem less friendly that usual. As for the lack of diversity - don't buy that either, the usual mad array of little bands playing all over the place was in evidence, it was just harder to get there. there were many things i wanted to see (Back To The Planet, for example :( ) that i just didn't make it too because i knew i'd have a nightmare and that i'd probably be late....

Totally agree - the weather did have a depleting effect on people, there were a couple of times in the thickest, stickiest, busiest mud when I panicked too and it was bloody hard work to keep going which is bound to dampen the spirit (as well as the rain dampening everything else!). But when I stumbled in the mud lots of people went to help me up, people were retrieving other's lost wellies and generally there was a lot of helpfulness around.

The kindest person I met was right at the start after we had tramped through lots of muddy fields to the family camping with things falling off our trolleys etc. We couldn't find a spot to pitch until a lovely steward found us a great place and helped us to carry our stuff up the hill - thank you mr. steward!

LVs been killed by it's own success. It was a nightmare walking along the railway track because of the entire site trudging blindly up there only to find they couldn't get in. We didn't even bother trying to get in, but the huge amount of people milling about aimlessly made it difficult to get to the Bimble Inn.

I wish I'd checked out Trash City properly, but tis a shame that Lost Vagueness has lost a lot of what used to make it. I think maybe you're being somewhat over harsh however ... or am I just being too nice?

I've heard about some of these stupid politics behind the scenes before the fest, stuff about LV people and Trash City people being seriously at odds with each other, but I still think the general LV idea/concept has its place, I just wish they'd revamp a few things and get some new ideas ... and stop charging obscene prices for caravan hire, that was just taking the piss big style ...

Agree, too many people and too much popularity is a lot of it ...

And no-one needs to find it hard to get to the Bimble  . Cheapest beer and cider of any of the bars, and their own varieties ...

I started to think that three years ago and its barely changed since we 1st set foot in the Chapel in 2002 and had a fantastic time. Then the chapel had lots of benches which were cool.

Trash city looked incredible with the tumbledown building and would have spend time there but got too exhausted by the time it started to really get going. It was 2 quid to get in to the 'disco' which irritated me a tad.

To be fair, I'd never seen a wedding in the Chapel there, and the one I was a guest at on Friday (bus and hipster, for those whom know them) was pretty spectacular and a wonderful occasion.

is it true that the top notch LV package included a helicopter ride to site?

if so they really have lost their way

Are elements of the Mutoids behind Trash City? If so, it showed - great art, fabulous area, felt nice. So much around LV feels like it's tagged on afterthought.

yep, it's the mutoids. they've patched up their differences with Eavis in recent years and are working well with him now.. looked LOVELY down there - especially the planes (hence Roy LV's strop :D )

I'd heard that too, the £10,000 caravan package  (as opposed to slumming it at £6,000, sans copter  ). Someone (elsewhere) quoted from the LV site to prove it, but I'd need to dig around slightly and I'm supposed to be washing my rucsacs ....

It's still possible it was a myth or exaggeration though ...

from the 20+ people i know who worked in LV this year (including one who was working in the trailer park), i think i'd have heard - i got most of the rest of the goss

Yeah I really liked the look of the place - it felt thought out, while so much at LV is just a bit tagged-on n scrappy. Anyway, mutoids always take my vote. They always did the best parties. Great art too.

fair play, i know a few competitions throughout the festival by Q etc involved flying the winners in.

which seemed to be at odds with all the banners along the stage road shouting about climate change. i liked the banners though, glasto remembers its social awareness, pity they were in areas the punters couldnt even see.
