Ghana versus USA (knockout)

Wonderful game. Two teams that wanted to play football, even if they couldn't always manage it. Two teams full of players who would rather play than writhe around on the ground looking for an Oscar nomination. A referee who let the game happen rather than trying to be the centre of attention. Fun fun fun. And the perfect result.

The better team won. But I'd just like to say, one last time, Landon Donovan is a great athlete and a stand up guy both on and off the pitch.

Best of in the future mate...:)

The US came up short – not enough top quality players in the end. But I liked their attitude and spirit and the way they tried to play. They were a credit to US football.

Thought Ghana were clearly inferior - always prefer the better teams to go through - hate underdogs. Pure fodder for Uruguay - who will, in turn be fodder for whoever they play.

Despite your name, you don't understand football, do you?

As ever in football – and the reason good strikers are paid so much money – it came down to finishing and composure in front of goal. Ghana finished their two goals brilliantly. Uruguay, in Suárez, have a finisher in shit-hot form, and in Forlán, have a creator in shit-hot form. Their quarter final will be a good watch I think. I'd make Uruguay favourites, and if they do win, I would not put it past them winning the tournament.

I wanted the US to win, but the better team prevailed and Ghana was the better team.. The USA has opportunities to win this game and they missed.. Am I sad the USA is out? Yes. Ghana outplayed the USA, and cheers to them for advancing

Yes, I've enjoyed watching the Septics play, and they have played with a lot of heart if nothing else. Still better team deservedly went through.

I was woken at stupid o'clock by a large group of Ghanaians carousing in the street celebrating their win  I couldn't get back to sleep for ages after they'd dispersed......plus a couple of local kids have got hold of vuvuzelas
Also my domestic life is being disrupted as my son and husband are expecting that I have to do everything because they want to follow every game and are not available for domestic duties at all*

* the very few they deign to do in the first place anyway.

nah, it was an equal game.

possesion was 50/50 towards the end of full time too

I think you miss his point. Neither side had any Arsenal players, but the USA had a few Premiership regulars, ergo the USA were the better side. It's high grade up yer backside footie parochialism.

Or he was watching a completely different game.

As an aside, surely its no coincidence that the one African side to go through is the one that doesnt have its "best player" dominating the team? Granted Essien is not exactly Eto'o or Drogba, but the teamwork on display is far higher than anything Ivory Coast, Cameroon or SA produced.

Not really. There isn't a totally dominant player for Nigeria either, and they didn't do at all well.

What Ghana have is strength in depth. There are a load of Ghanaian players who didn't make the squad who are pretty much at the same standard. They have a genuine squad rather than a team and few players that can be added to it in a crisis. Essien is missing, but Anthony Annan isn't much of a drop in class as a replacement. Much less well known, but pretty much the same quality of player.

They also have a group of young players who have loads of experience of tournament football. They've come up through the U17s, U19s, and U21s together, getting to the later stages or winning the relevant CAF and FIFA competitions. When England give a young player a game in the world cup it's generally at most his fourth or fifth game in a FIFA tournament. When the Ghanaians do it's generally their tenth or eleventh game of international tournament football. They already know what they are doing.

It's not a one off for them. Ghana have been world champions at a couple of age group levels over recent years, as well as a steady position as regular successes in the African Nations Cup. It's a long term policy that is starting to bear fruit at world cup level now.

They will be a better team in 4 years time. Then they may even have a shot at reaching the final. Adiyiah and Osei have the potential to be one of the all time great international strike partnerships. Ayew is already beginning to be a top class attacking midfielder. Inkoom, Jonathan Mensah, and Vorsah are already the makings of the nucleus of a quality back four. All right at the beginning of their career.

Well they weren't Americans. I think I'll compound my crime by saying it's exactly the sort of selfish behaviour one would expect from a large group of drunken men.

Excuse me. I must defend the honour of my gender. Surely there is NO kind of selfish behaviour that one shouldn't expect from a large group of drunken men?

I'd barricade myself in a soundproofed underground bunker this afternoon if i was you. ;)

Worth watching just to see the interview with a completely-beside-himself-with-excitement Marcel Desailly:D

Bet he's got a headache this morning.

I was shocked. Apart from those penalty kicks it looked like Ghana couldn't hit barn door with an earth removal truck especially that Gyan guy. But they came good. And he had an aberration.

Fair play to them. Sad to see USA go out as I'd love to see "soccer" give NFL and NBA a run for their money.

Remove plug from tv ;)

Rubbish

I'm talking about the better teams and ther USA is and was better in this match. I suggest you might actually attend a match instead of wallowing in your armchair every 4 years.

It's the result which actually determines what team is better, though (bar outrageous refereeing decisions etc).

If the USA were such a good team how come they conceded 2 goals and only managed to get back one?

Here you betray your complete lack of knowledge of football.

If teams were deemed better or worse than other purely based on the numbers of goals scored there would be little to spend hours and hours arguing about, wouldn't there?
