states are adminstritave, i believe nations are to an extent constructed but based on the things i mentioned above

so czechs & slovakians didn't have a choice when they broke from their former nation, croats, bosnians & serbians didn't have a choice, scots & welsh didn't have a choice as they devolve from the britain, latvia, lithunia & estionia didn't have a choice, eriteria didn't have a choice, catalans and basques are not choosing, Ireland didn't have a choice, pakistan and bangladesh didn't have a choice, Poles didn't have a choice when they were partioned and wiped off the map for 100 years, but still emerged as a nation

I think they do

Sadly - you are right.

I have dual nationality, one passport say the United Kingdom of Great Britain etc etc and the other one Co-operative Republic of Guyana. Not that I have ever used it (dont think most countries would let me in if I did), but never know when it might be handy to have.

Conscription maybe?

the choice most of those people were given was 'keep your existing set of arbitrary borders or go back to a previous but equally arbitrary set'.

Nation and state are inseparable, since the former only exists to facilitate the latter.

So you're saying if a nation doesn't have it's own state it can't exist, scots, welsh, cornish, basques, catalans, kurds, etc.. "nation without a state"

Or what about in Africa where you have states but agruably no nation - "state without a nation"

how many people would be willing to die for their nation but not their state?

How many nations are ruled over by the current Russian state?

And sort-of conversely to what oisleep wrote - but entirely in support - I had a day-long argument with a certain Native American activist about whether there were any states that were coterminous with their alleged nations.

We stalled on the one possible candidate example: Iceland; but we stopped mostly because we'd run out of bourbon.

(Now it strikes me that at some point there must have been populations of both Inuit and Scandinavian origin on the landmass... so the remaining count of "nation-states" that cover single nations is, er, zero.)

Yup pretty much, Walker Connor quotes a survey (albeit done in 1972) in his book "A nation is a nation is a state is an ethnic group" that says out of the 132 entities considered to be states as of 1971

Only 12 states could be justifiably described as nation states

25 states had a single nation which made up 90% of states population

Another 25 had a single nation which made up 75-89% of states population

31 had a single nation which made up 50-74%

And in 39 states the largest nation made up less than 50% of the population

No doubt with increasing population movements in the last thirty years those numbers will be even more marked now

Walker Connor wrote a lot, and also lambasted fellow academics about the misuse and inappropriate use of the words state and nation, it's not just a matter of semantics, it's real

Using the definitions correctly also makes a mockery of things like the united nations, international monetary fund, national interest, international law, all these things have nothing to do with nations and everything to do with states

I'll give you a fucken no vote I'll no vote you and your fucken hat!!' over and over gave him away.

Is the big pussycat still on the Catford Centre?

yes - here

he's getting to the point where he could do with a clean and re-paint again. there was a lot of fuss about 10 years ago when scaffolding was put up round him (for a previous clean up), and rumours went round that he was going to be taken down.

there have been plans floated for quite some time to so something with the shopping centre and flats above (either a fine example of 1970s brutalist architecture or a bloody awful carbuncle depending on your perspective) that haven't come to anything yet, but fairly sure the plans include the cat staying put. there was a plan in the 70s for another cat or two, possibly one at the catford broadway end, but they never happened.

ETA - also this on the wall going in to the shopping centre

I first saw the cat in 1984, so it is a venerable beastie.
