Donald Trump the road that might not lead to the White House - Redux 2024 thread.

Apparently the order of candidates is chosen by a lottery-style drawing of letters under a system that has been in place for almost 50 years, so Trump supporters can't really claim "election interference" here - if alphabetical order made a real difference you'd probably see a lot more fringe candidates with names like Aaron Aardman. The order of letters is also rotated by district so the candidates aren't in the same order on ballots across the state.

On the 82nd day before an election, the Secretary of State conducts a randomized drawing of letters of the alphabet pursuant to California Elections Code section 13112. The resulting order of letters constitutes the "randomized alphabet" to be used for determining the order of candidates' names on the ballot.

This procedure was established by legislation passed in 1975 in response to court rulings declaring that standard alphabetical order or incumbent-first was unconstitutional.

I'm not arguing about the ordering of candidates, simply wondering why they can't all be on one screen.

Additionally, it's fairly unclear whether someone should press Next or More. I actually entirely missed the "More", assuming that "Next" would take me to the next set of candidates.

It's terrible design.

Yeah, guess they could do a lot better, though it looks like there'd be little chance of anybody voting for the wrong candidate by mistake, so it doesn't get a place in the Ballot Hall of Shame

those California ones are in alphabetical order though.

Yeah, even under a system specifically designed to mix things up so things aren't always in alphabetical order, things will still end up in alphabetical order sometimes - this is what paper ballots in LA County look like this year, there don't seem to be many Harris supporters complaining about it

I watched a clip of Fox News discussing this. Jesse Watters was especially incensed and said he'd consider his wife hiding a vote for Harris as marriage ending betrayal. Keep in mind that he cheated on his first wife with his new wife. He also slashed the tires of the current wife so he could swoop in and rescue her. One thing I continually notice about these people is that they're completely lacking in any self-awareness.

Fox News host said on air that if his wife votes for Kamala Harris in the election, it would be on a par with her having "an affair."

Jesse Watters said on Fox's The Five show that his wife, Emma DiGiovine, "pulling the lever for Harris, that's the same thing as an affair," when the panel discussed the vice president's new ad encouraging wives to make their own choice in the voting booth.

The ad, which was posted on X by the account Vote Common Good on October 28, showed two wives going to the voting booth and marking Harris-Walz on their ballot, suggesting that they didn't need to tell their husbands who they voted for.

Read three different versions of that story - totally weird!!!! The first one was from a religious leader... claims that wife not voting as her husband is grounds for divorce.

I want to be able to just eye-roll past stuff like this but it's really alarming in the context of wondering what 'men' like this might do to their wives in the event of a Harris victory. The control/ownership element on their parts is horrifying.

Yes, I'd like to dismiss it as some kind of joke, but I see people on social media reposting it. It annoys me that conservative men can post shit like this, but if women complain about it, they're being raging feminists, "Karens", or the new tag in use: "toxic femininity." I sometimes wonder if women used their second amendment right to defend their rights as these men claim to have a right to, what the response would be. "Oh, you can't be violent, no, no. That would be wrong." They're only ok with violence when they get to be the purveyors of it.

These people are not hiding who and what they are though. They're not joking or saying this stuff for effect. Their controlling entitlement is clear as day. They're effectively telling their women - but all women really - that they have no right to autonomy and woe betide them if they 'go rogue'.

It's egregious abuse, plain and simple. They may as well just cut to the chase and say what they really want to say which is 'if you cross me by voting Harris, don't be surprised if I beat you to a pulp'.

It is what it is.

Why are the candidates' names repeated under "Working Families" and "Conservative?"
NYS and CT have what's known as "fusion voting", where parties can nominate the same candidates. the idea is to try to pull the parties in either a leftish or rightish direction. so, most republicans get the conservative nomination too, but not all - see the fourth row up from bottom here. this mattered in 1970, when republican james buckley was elected US senator on the conservative line, defeating the republican and the democrat, and in 1969, when republican john lindsay won the mayoral race on the liberal line, defeating the republican and the democrat. the liberals are gone and the WF, a union - sponsored party, has kinda taken their role.

What the actual fuck.

A community Halloween parade in Mount Pleasant Borough has drawn controversy after participants joined it with an elaborate display that appeared to depict Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris with hands bound, accompanied by a vehicle with a roof-mounted rifle. Witnesses alternately described the woman as bound with chains or another restraint.

Images of the display spread across social media Thursday, the morning after the Westmoreland County community’s parade. It appeared to feature an ATV bedecked with flags, a Trump sign, and a roof-mounted sniper rifle, apparently made from cardboard. The photos also displayed a woman walking behind the vehicle with her hands bound. At least two men wearing dark sunglasses, apparently impersonating security forces, accompanied the vehicle.

Perfectly normal behaviour.

right, that's in chinatown. other districts might have korean, creole, etal.

Ours is simpler.

Canada has two official languages, so the ballots are in English and French.

I seem to remember that it is very expensive for you guys to keep translating your ballots in all the different languages.

How much uproar would there be if you guys only printed your ballots in English?

Also, who decides what languages will be used?

thre's no official language in the US so the language on the ballots depends on location. this being new york, lots of languages get used, but not in my own district, which is only in english (i've found it in the meantime).

Sorry to be curious, but what language are your laws written in? Do you have to translate the laws into various languages?

Our town, although it is 60% francophone, decided not to become bilingual. Legal stuff would be in English only. They felt that the cost of translating would be a lot, and, since the law depends on the words used, it would be really difficult to ensure the legal language would be the same in both languages. If you are a francophone here, you can get all your services in French and the town would translate documents for you. But the official/legal version would be in English.

I guess that those Americans who demand people speak English really don't have a legal leg to stand on. All languages are American.

A self-proclaimed ‘progressive feminist’ writes the following in an op piece for the Torygraph:

Of course, Trump is not perfect – who is when we’re talking about American politicians? But practically, to many of us, he offers hope for a strong America, with protections for free speech and democracy, and a restoration of women’s rights. He offers unpopular, uncouth truths and a humanness that we aren’t used to seeing in politicians – refreshing to many.

:facepalm: :facepalm: :facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

(Not gonna bother linking to that shit)

Is the Torygraph British?

If so, but specifying it would seem to imply that American politicians are not perfect, but yours are?

Maybe he should have skipped the American part.
