Why is buying a mattress so confusing? I’ve read all the guides but they’re pretty much all selling you a particular mattress/brand.
So far I’ve been told I need:
Pocket spring
Memory foam
Gel
Firm
Medium
Medium/Firm

Aaaaaaarrrrrggggghhhhh
Surely you just lie on a bunch of them and decide which feels the best?

Thanks moonsi til. We’ve gone for a pocket spring with cooling gel top. I went round to try a few on Saturday and this one felt amazing. Thank the lord for interest free credit as mattresses are bloody expensive!

We went for Therapur from Dreams. Bensons had igel beds which were similar but I preferred the Dreams one instantly.
Otty do mattresses with a ‘cooling airflow’ but I wanted one I could try in the shop.

I was nearly suckered into a £100 tempur pillow which is cooling and designed for side sleepers but luckily it was out of stock when I ordered online. 😄

Thank you, I will investigate. Like you, there is no way i would buy a mattress without testing it first. Mine is really comfortable but very warm.

Bought off Facebook marketplace from someone living in the Teign Valley, quite a nice house they had so assume they spent some money on it when it was new and the table looked good quality and well looked after

£95 for table and 6 chairs (not all in shot:thumbs:). Yes it is rather big for the space as its 100cm wide but even with a smaller width table you still couldn’t use in the centre of the room. If I ever need to get 6 round it I’ll be bringing it into the living room anyway  B0D3DF92-1316-40FE-9291-A1F874691962.jpeg8CED9852-07F0-48CF-A85E-9A82250567AD.jpeg

A few months back I painted my hall stairs green which was a huge mistake so they never got fully finished. Trying pink now.

Be careful of pink inside.

A few years ago, I wanted my living room changed to a barely there pink. When comparing and discussing swatches, I specifically said I wanted it to look like a white room in a bright pink sunset - that effect. I went off for a break while it was done, and a few days later, I arrived home to find myself walking into Barbara Cartland's boudoir.

It was the pink of Battenburg sponge - did not resemble the pink on the chart at all. I cried. For such a light colour shade, it also felt oppressively dark. I tried to make the best of it for quite some time, but hated it - found myself apologizing/explaining to all who entered. After spending lockdown feeling depressed by it, I whitewashed the lot.

Tanya1982 i am having WTF did I do with the green. I have bought 2 tester pots & like both so just need to decide. I’m miffed that tester pots were £4 a pop & they weren’t the most spendy.

I would do all green, and then all pink, and see which you prefer. Having both at the same time is just going to result in you preferring one over the other, and being stuck with both.

Bought this lovely little chair yesterday. Was very satisfying going to buy it and getting it home in a 1.5hr round trip; had been a bit trepidatious about getting it home on public transport, but it's super light, and the tube was mercifully empty.

I'm so happy with it, and it was a rare bargain off Gumtree, £15 for what retails at £120, in really good condition, and it's got a 360 degree swivel which is fab.

And it's so much more than a chair - I feel like I've gained an additional room now that I have it set up at my desk (and cleared the desk of all the crap that had littered it), so don't have to do all my work hunched up sitting on bed or floor anymore.

Can I ask a question. I bought this table and chairs from eBay earlier and we're quite chuffed with it. I've given it a good clean, but wonder if it needs something else. I don't really want to change to finish but perhaps enhance it? What would we use use? Oil, wax or something different?

Hard to know if you don't know what it's already finished with. If it's varnished, any oil/wax will simply sit on top.

It could be worth finding a bit that's not in view (under an edge, for example, and trying some sort of furniture wax (I tend to favour beeswax) on it, see if it absorbs it, and go for it.

Ah, another one of that range of tables/furniture (these have been discussed on Urban before and I was admiring my mum's various related furnishings earlier today :D ) - they are beautiful, I wouldn't do anything to it.

Maybe some of those seat pads for the chairs though, I find it quite uncomfy sitting on a wooden seat for any length of time - just the removable ones that you tie on around the upright bits to keep them in place for a bit of padding.

Thanks folks. I don't really want to change it as such, just perhaps bring out what it's got if that makes sense. Don't think it's varnished. Maybe just some furniture polish?

I missed those discussions Epona what is the range? It was advertised as Indonesian hardwood but I think they were just guessing.

I'll have to look it up again, I remember someone posted a picture of the rectangular coffee table from the range some time ago and a load of us chimed in that they had one and we were joking about it being the U75 coffee table, well I don't personally but my mum has a few pieces which I hope I have dropped enough unsubtle hints about to be left them in the will. :hmm: They were all the rage in the early to mid '90s usually from those importer shops that were popular at around that time - stuff from all over the world, very solid and attractive items of furniture with lovely wood grain and large dark metal fixtures.

When I find the name of the things I'll post it :D

EDIT: Chennai was the name of one of the furniture ranges, I think there is another similar one too.

I think it was Sweet FA that did this recently

I (along with a fair few urbs as it turns out) have got the coffee table version:

So has bellaozzydog:

I think a few more show up here; moose has got one:

Re: doing something to it. I think Epona found it was mango? The way it looks now is pretty much as good as it gets - which is lovely btw. Ime before you do anything to it, you'll need to sand it all down and refinish it to make it look any different (and then it won't look much different tbh.) It looks like someone may have done that already in its past as it's smoothed off around the edges. I've heard/read that furniture polish isn't good for it long term - silicone eating varnish or something? If you use wax/oil, it'll be an arseache to look after as you won't want to put anything hot on it & be constantly grabbing people's glasses and putting coasters down (and you'll still have to sand it first). It is what it is - a chunky piece of wood that can put up with a battering, is pretty forgiving and you don't have to worry too much if you scratch it/do drugs off it/dance on it/the dog chews the legs etc.

Yep, ours is still going strong, we moved in here in '96 and bought it fairly soon afterwards. If it looks like it's drying out, we use some random spray or beeswax polish on it. I think it's generally referred to as sheesham, which is a fast-growing Indian rosewood, plentiful enough to furnish many more Urban residences.

I've spent over 2 decades planning to sand the corners as they snag my tights all the time.

If it is indeed made from the same wood as The Urban Table, ours comes up beautifully with some beeswax polish. Doesn't need much care, though.
