Decriminalisation of the sex industry - Corbyn says yes, what thinks urban?

yes i just told you that  i entered the thread yesterday

yes I'm aware you just told me that too, you don't need to tell me that you've just told me something.... I was referring to 'this instance' of you entering the thread in order to make a snide comment

yeh. it's clear you mean something different to other people by 'entered'.

It's a multi-page thread that has been going since Tuesday, you can 'enter' the thread more than once. You posted in the thread yesterday, you 'entered' it again today to make a snide comment. The context of 'in this instance' ought to have made that point clearer for you but apparently its taken you several posts to understand.

so you say. but you still haven't thought about it when the answer was in your post. could you either answer the question i asked you or find something better to do - this is really rather tedious.

well when you enter a thread to make a snide comment and then just carry on with politeness pedantry you tend to derail it, yes it is tedious and you caused it

so returning to that point, asking someone to "think about it"when the answer fucking obvious to anyone with more than the wit of a lobotomised slow worm can hardly be considered snide.

unless you're arrogant enough to consider that only your own opinion is the 'correct' one here then it is pretty snide

being as the question's "whose interests are served..." i suggest the answer's factual and not simply an opinion. perhaps you'd like to have a stab at answering it.

It was my question to Athos. I already have my own opinion that there are multiple interests served by not allowing sex workers to operate partnerships ranging from opposition to sex work from religious groups, conservatives etc.. through to non sex workers who profit from operating their own premises and/or controlling sex workers.

very good :) and we're finally back on topic :)

The preposterous reaction to Corbyn's decriminalisation proposals was reminiscent of the drug prohibition debate; those in favour of decriminalisation or regulation are not offering an elegant solution but the empirical evidence is very strong that it could make a bad situation less worse. Instead of engaging with the evidence the prohibitionists divert the debate with empty emotional rhetoric. We had the absurdity of Jess Philips and Caroline Flint virtually accusing Corbyn of being a sleazy dirty old man. If Flint wants to question Corbyn and other male MP's motives she could always debate the other Caroline (Lucas). If she's woman enough.

I honestly don't know whether legalisation would be good or bad.

If legalisation, together with registration and compulsory health checks (as in Germany), made things safer for the sex workers, then I would support it.

I have no 'moral' view on this, but am concerned with regard to coercion and trafficking of women into Britain (or anywhere else). I've read some horror stories, about women who were being told that there was work for them, they travel from Eastern Europe, find themselves deep in debt, and working as prostitutes.

Prostitution is not harmless, either to the punter or sex worker, but I feel that stopping it is probably impossible, therefore if it can be made safer, it should be made safer.

Be curious about anything liberal or progressive in this country and you're fucked. :( It's the one thing that unites the Tories, Labour and SNP - no move on liberal issues such as sex work, 'right to die' or drug laws, issues which many other western countries aren't scared of discussing with a view to changing the status quo. A discussion in this country is just that, a tick box exercise, a nod to democracy and listening to other voices, but with no intent to change. Corbyn looks like the smallest puff of fresh air, but he may get kicked to death by his own party or if he survives to the next GE get a kicking then...

Yup, just look at this thread as an example. :( However hard it may (pun fully intended) you need to leave your moral hangups at the door with these kind of discussions, otherwise nothing will change.
