Cost of living- what’s going to happen?

what if we just gave all of England to France?
If we were going toi be taken over by another European country France wouldn't be top of my list.

I think I'd go for the Netherlands or Sweden. Or maybe San Marino for the LoLs or Monaco just so we could have outdoor escalators...

And the rest of the commonwealth actually. Whilst we're joshing. Let's have all that back as part of Britania too. Why not.

Oh you've gone too far... Jokes about The SE are fine but tut tut.

the UK installed the outdoor escalator system in HK. there's just nowhere here really that needs them.

We don't NEED outdoor escalators. But we WANT outdoor escalators. Besides, Lincoln, Edinburgh or Sheffield to name but three would all be improved by that Monaco/HK vibe. Norwich maybe less so...

As a recent visit to Glasgow can attest, they wouldn't go a miss there either.

don't know how much larger an event you think will do it than many thousands of people being put in peril of dying from hypothermia
Or indeed, thousands of people actually dying of hypothermia. Talking about triggers for social unrest etc.
i am a big pessimist and don't want to piss on anyone's hopes for what might come of the expected "kicking off".
Nothing good, unfortunately. The problem is that nothing good can now come from not kicking off either. And rioting and burning stuff, is a very good way to keep warm.

I look forward to our becoming East Eire in due course

There are many theories written about the role of governments, but broadly these can be summarised into a few fundamental duties. These include (1) keeping the population adequately fed and housed; and (2) keeping the population secure. If governments fail to achieve their fundamental duties, they lose legitimacy and tend to fall pretty spectacularly. This is what the UK government are risking at the moment. Failure to meet the needs of (1) for a substantial minority risks it “kicking off” such that it also fails to meet the needs of (2) in the eyes of another swathe of the population. They don’t want to be in the hot seat if the population becomes sufficiently disillusioned by these failures.

A lot of alarmist stuff being posted on this thread, and unpatriotic people trying to put down the UK.

Just for example, we do have outdoor escalators. There are some near the entrance to Westfield shopping centre in Stratford. I myself have been escalated by them, outdoors, right here in our own great nation.

I see you're channelling Boris Johnson

So , what you are quite literally saying is you think Stratford East London is identical to Monaco. I bet you’ve never even read any Shakespear.

This talk of “kicking off” makes me cringe. Reminds me of football hooligans who just want a fight. Nothing is gonna be won or lost at a “demonstration” with stupid fucking socialist worker banners. They do nothing and never have because guess what the people in power do not gaf.

What would work is people getting sufficiently desperate that they can’t and won’t pay, and sufficiently angry that we finally get rid of the fucking Tories. To be replaced with what no one knows because Labour and that fucking useless lawyer couldn’t fight their way out a wet paper bag. Need to get that woman with the long red hair who was a single mum and who seems to regularly talk sense in charge.

Bet your all gutted I don’t contribute more regularly to the politics forum :D

Spoken like an expert escalator.

Don’t look now, Edie, but those things both fall under the broader banner of “kicking off”

that we finally get rid of the fucking Tories.

If the population get “sufficiently angry”, it won’t just be the Tories that go, it will be the legitimacy of the entire government. No government can govern without the cooperation of the people. Every government looks secure until it isn’t. The government of the Arab Spring liked more secure than ours, I’d say — they had authoritarian control. Didn’t help them, though, once people had no food.

Once a population is no longer content to be governed by those in charge, the replacement is unlikely to be more of the same. It’s a dangerous time, frankly — extremists of all stripes tend to dominate.

Yes, actually

I'd actually vote for you, if we can't have Jeremy corbyn

That’s what worries me too. Because conditions like this where people are working their arses off and literally can’t afford to turn the heating on are when the far right- with their hatred and targeting of the vulnerable- get traction. I don’t worry about the far left, at worst they will cripple us with endless strikes like the 1970s but this country won’t ever be seriously at threat from communism. The far right who want to somehow blame fuel prices and lack of resources on immigrant communities are the danger.

Labour need to urgently reinvent themselves away from the party of the liberal middle class and start representing the vast majority of the population who are currently unrepresented. They are so lost.

You give the swp rather more importance than they deserve. But the greater problem is that there is no way out of the crisis we're in under the current system. We're finding that governments around the world, not just here, are simply not up to the job of presiding over a change to a net zero economy. Our government is going to let thousands of people die from hypothermia. And your let's get someone in who talks sense wouldn't change a thing in the way they operate in relation to the energy companies.

i live in a fairly good area of london, and i can tell that the shops around here are total piss takers. it's very rare that you catch a bargin, or think something is reasonably priced. i was thirsty this mornign and popped into a co-op, 2quid for a tiny bottle of fucking orange juice. charity shops where a t-shirt is £6. books are £1.50 instead of bloody 50p. to "pop down the shops" now to get some shopping and maybe a coffee and sandwich costs about £50 around here. I just don't do it. I have a weekly treat of a coffee and a cake, a night out a fortnight, my pret subscription and that's about it. I don't earn terrible money either. the idea of foreign holidays is just a far off dream. saving? forget it.

You're right, but it can't happen. There wasn't much of a Labour left to begin with but Starmer and his sock puppets on the NEC have scoured most of it away. They've even made maneuvers to try and deselect popular and talented labour MPs like Zarah Sultana in favour of yet more grey-suited PPE drones.
