Saeb Erekat in hospital
A senior figure in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) has been taken to hospital with coronavirus, it has emerged. According to Reuters, witnesses said the chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat has been taken to hospital from this home in the occupied West Bank by an Israeli ambulance.

Erekat tested positive on 8 October: his Twitter account has since been full of posts thanking officials for their well wishes. However, it now seems his condition has taken a turn for the worse. The PLO’s Negotiations Affairs Department said:

Following his contraction of COVID-19, and due to the chronic health problems he faces in the respiratory system, Dr Erekat’s condition now requires medical attention in a hospital. He is currently being transferred to a hospital in Tel Aviv.

I don't know much about him but this is shocking . He was involved in the Oslo peace accords.
Saeb Erekat in medical coma after coronavirus complications
Long-time chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat was in “critical” condition and in a medically induced coma on Monday, said the Israeli hospital in Jerusalem treating him for coronavirus complications.

The Palestine Liberation Organization said on Sunday that Erekat had been admitted to Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital’s coronavirus intensive care unit due to “chronic health problems in the respiratory system”.

The 65-year-old had tested positive for Covid-19 on 19 October, the PLO said.

Erekat had “arrived in serious condition” and was receiving oxygen, the hospital said on Sunday, adding that his condition was serious but stable.

On Monday morning, Hadassah said that after a “quiet night” his condition “deteriorated and is now defined critical and due to respiratory distress, he is anaesthetised and ventilated”.

Erekat, who lives in the biblical town of Jericho in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, underwent lung-transplant surgery in the US in 2017.

“Erekat is a challenge to treat for coronavirus since he had lung transplants, he is immunosuppressed, and has another bacterial infection in addition to coronavirus,” Hadassah said on Monday.

Hadassah said it was “is in contact with international medical authorities regarding the treatment policy of this complex patient”.

The Jerusalem-born Erekat serves as the PLO’s secretary-general and in remains Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas’s inner circle.

He has consistently voiced support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

There have been 42,490 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the West Bank, including 381 deaths.

Algerian president has been hospitalised

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been hospitalised in the country’s capital Algiers days after stating he was self isolating due to contact with cases of COVID-19.

The president’s office said in a statement:

On the recommendation of his doctors, the president Monsieur Abdelmadjid Tebboune entered a specialised care unit in the army’s central hospital in Ain Naadja in Algiers.

His health is stable and is not causing any concern.

They added that the president will continue to work from hospital.

:hmm:

Why do they always say that politicians will work from hospital? It's such obvious bollocks. 'I'll prepare the statement on the budget and sign this trade deal just after the ventilator has been shoved down my throat and I've been turned on my stomach for a bit'

Probably because at the first sign of a slight cough they get rushed to a luxury private hospital. Most of them are perfectly capable of working because they're not very ill.

It's their way of saying that they're still in charge. Scared someone else will take over while they're ill.
