Buying a home and don't know how anything works

Well the strange thing is the 8 weeks expires in mid July, so unless they want to go to court over it it's in their interest to plan a move.

It's in danger of jeopardising the whole sale. Greedy landlords only serving notice in May when they accepted our offer in March. :(
It’s not in their interest to move out before being evicted unless they have somewhere to go. Rents have risen hugely and if they leave before eviction the council will say they made themselves intentionally homeless.

That's what I mean though. They're renting privately now, so better to find somewhere to go and be able to choose where they live, rather than waiting for the baliffs to turn up surely?

They shouldn't be in danger of homelessness because they're two adults in full time employment as I understand it.

Did you read Thora's post? Rents have skyrocketed, there's fewer properties available and just because both of them are in work doesn't mean that they can afford a massive rent hike because they have to move as the landlord sold the place they called home.

They can afford a 3 bedroom house when there's just two of them, so I don't imagine they're that hard up financially?

It's a nice house though, so I can understand if they're not in a hurry to leave. :(

We will just potentially have to restart our property search as a family of (soon to be) four living in a two bedroom flat. Sigh.

In a weeks time I will hopefully JHFTK

I’m currently in the perineum between exchange and completion and haven’t had anything to report until BT contacted me today to cancel my order - for some reason when BT contacted the vendors to arrange taking over the line from the move date the vendors told them that they weren’t moving :hmm: so BT cancelled my order

I’ve pinged an email to the estate agent and have started a new order with BT, so hopefully that’s all sorted now.

Congrats Elpenor!

It looks like my worries about the tenants refusing to move out may have been unnecessary. They're just waiting until the last minute as is their right.

So we will be hopefully all set to exchange in a few weeks and JGTFK a week after that. :)

It's been a rollercoaster journey, really glad that the end is finally in sight.

Trying to arrange a pre-move in clean today

I’ve really chosen the wrong week to also change mobile provider and hence have a temporary number haven’t I :D
I managed to drop and break my mobile the week of my move. Luckily I was able to order a replacement online and pick it up from the store so I didn't have to worry about where to get it delivered.

Think the phone will be sorted tomorrow - completion isn’t till Thursday so plenty of time

I’ve managed to get an end of tenancy clean sorted today but think I’ve left myself too little time to get a cleaner for a post-completion / pre-move in clean

Cest la vie

Is it actually a requirement to get a professional clean done of the place you are selling if you are a seller?

Asking because I'm ignorant and because the last place we bought wasn't that clean when we moved in.

Not usually, no. It could be specified in the contract (after all anything (legal) can be specified in a contract) but it’s not in any way standard.

I would generally expect it to be filthy as even the most organised and clean people probably won't manage to move house and clean it. They will be concentrating on cleaning their new house!

I've tried to do my best by running around after the removal men with the hoover, but that's all you can expect.

Also most places I have moved into I have immediately started taking to pieces, so cleaning would have been a bit of a waste of the sellers time.

I was thinking that when I leave this place I might try and do a deal with the purchasers where we pay half each.

Should have thought of that!

I think I’ve left it a bit late to organise a clean of the new house before the furniture comes in. Will try a few places tomorrow I guess

can you see if the same people will do the new place?

alternatively, round here, you can hire carpet washing machine things from the big morrisons - don't know if they are any good

not that i'm aware of

similar (although i moved in to a rented place so had a bit of an overlap, so there was time to have a more leisurely hoove and dispose of the dead mouse the cats had left under the bookcase)

Also most places I have moved into I have immediately started taking to pieces, so cleaning would have been a bit of a waste of the sellers time.

and yes, you never know if buyers intend to do major works / re-decorate / change all the carpets

On the other side of this coin, when we bought our place, even though it wasn't really dirty, we had a really good clean before doing anything else.

They don’t cover the new area sadly. Carpets are only upstairs and it’s a pet-free house but who knows - maybe worth looking into the machine, will add to my list

Is it only you moving in? If so could you use one of the other bedrooms while you clean the main one to start with, then you can do the others at leisure. Or can you clean the main bedroom before you move in?

I contacted our solicitor for an update. He’s still not had confirmation that the buyers have instructed their solicitors, have chased the solicitors a number of times and heard nothing back! Would have been useful to know this… have chased estate agent.

And i got off a flight yesterday to a message the friend I’d been staying with tested positive for the vid, now I have it… feel fine luckily..

I wanted to hand over a house that was sparkling clean, chopped wood for the long burner & champers in the fridge but instead they got clean, stacked neatly wood & champers in the fridge! I totally ran out of time in moving day as did the people I bought from whom were mopping up the hall as they met me at the front door which made me feel better about me still scrubbing kitchen cupboards when my buyer turned up!
