I've got plenty of camping bits and bobs in the house, but I can't think of any emergency scenario where I would be advised to leave the security of four walls. Any weather event is going to be much worse outside. No earthquakes here. It's on a high spot, so flooding will be worse out there. What would be the point in making yourself more vulnerable by wandering around?

I always carry a (fish) gutting knife, hickory chips, a folding smoking box of my own design, some fishing line, weight and hook so in the event of an emergency I can catch, clean and smoke a fish

Apparently it was initially called that because the batteries couldn't cope with supplying the required current once the circuit began to heat up (increasing the resistance), so you needed to use it in short bursts.

In which case, I'm not sure to what extent you can define "catching and cleaning a fish" as an emergency. Unless you're *really* expecting actually catching a fish to be the last thing that can possibly happen.
