2016 Coup in Turkey?

In Istambul, a journalist called Oz, was with a group who had surrounded some officers hiding in a van, when a jet flew over so low the sonic boom made everyone scatter and then the police on the ground all went mad firing into the air. Oz, in the rush to get out onto the street hours before had forgotten to put his socks on and was beginning to feel the rub. It was excellent footage, very tense.

Oz Katerji? I was watching him live too but I missed that, must have been after I fell asleep! I saw shots being fired, which was quite scary.

May this picture haunt all your fucking dreams for eternity

Oz katerji said he was working as a journalist in Istanbul during the live feed I watched last night.
He runs an aid programme with Helprefugees. He may freelance, but he is literally saving the lives of Syrians in turkey. He's an amazing guy.

i said to my friend last night, if theyve gone for it with a coup, they must be going for it properly, expecting the highest chances of success, loyalty, and likely with some kind of a nod from abroad. But no - totally wrong on that. Why try a coup on such weak grounds? I find it hard to understand. I guess on one level you don't know till you try, but still. I guess i should read up more on failed military coups attempts.

I woke up to the news a friend of mine is trapped there! En route to Vietnam, this was just meant to be a change-over! Crazy stuff always happens to him! Been contacting various embassies and consulates on his behalf for the past few hours.

"Have been under seige in instanbull airport. An armed mob broke in and caused chaos. Gun fire and explosions all night right outside and a bomb went off so near I got covered in bits of the cieling. Exciting times!! Seems to be calming down now."

Posted on facebook during the night.

then half an hour ago:

"All seems fine here. No flights in or out but airport starting to return to normal. Have eaten etc just waiting to see what happens. Thanks for all the well wishes"

He said the airport was crazy and he had to raid business lounge to get food, water and.... booze. Sounds like he has quite a haul and things are returning to normal. Sounds totally crazy elsewhere though. I don't think the coup is fully over but it's clear the crackdown is already beginning. Erdogan is gonna use this to settle scores...

Or one whose women are sensible enough to stay the fuck away from large crowds of blokes with guns.
True. Good point. The much more surprising thing is that thousands of civilians were willing to come out in support of Erdogan against armed soldiers & tanks, isn't it.

I know this is a really stupid question but who shuts down the Internet and how do they do it?
No, it isn't a stupid question, I wondered about that also. It seems all social media was shut down which may have been done by the regime to prevent the organisation of anti-regime demonstrations. They didn't apparently shut down the mobile networks though.

Not at all. The guy has been elected four times, he's won two referendums. I've no time for him myself, but people need to understand that he's very popular. And they should also understand why.

The pictures of soldiers being arrested is a real reminder that the Turkish army is made up of conscripts, lots of kids and a lot of them obviously not very well fed.

It's not all conscripts, far from it. Turkey has the fourth largest army in the world, and they're extremely well-trained and well-equipped. Also they're well-used to running the country. That's why it's suspicious that this has been such a fiasco.

can you attempt a simplified explanation of what the divide is between those who clearly love him and those (was it 48%?) who voted against him last time?

This plays into Erdogan's hands so completely, it's hard to believe all is what it seems. The Turkish army is not exactly crap at coups.

It's true that Erdogan has been packing the officer corps with loyalists, but even so...

Nah. This is nothing. I'm on my way there next week.

It's so much of nothing, I even suspect that Erdogan is behind the whole business.

Behind might be a stretch, but I could easily see him knowing it was going to happen and doing nothing to stop it. As he says, loads of people had already been arrested before this, so he would have been confident of it not getting out of hand.
