2016 Coup in Turkey?

Sporadic firing to west of Istanbul now (Tolga Alagoz) stream. Crowd seems confident.

I think the coup is surrounded

Oz katerji speaking in english is watching soldiers being disarmed and thrown into back of van by police in centre of Istanbul

Oz katerji streaming live massive gun fire going off in centre and jets.

It was the police firing in the air at passing jet.

He says the soldiers were kids who were not aggressive and seemed to give themselves up.

Small demo outside the Turkish embassy in London, guy was saying the coup is probably linked to elements of the military which had already seen a number of arrests earlier this year and it's a last-ditch roll of the dice for them. Predicted it'd be over by sun-up.

The state TV channel is back in loyalist hands and CNN was just showing footage of troopers struggling to contain crowds outside, plus every livestream seems to show massive crowds defying the curfew, so it certainly looks from a distance like it might be leaning that way. Still jets low level doing fly-bys to intimidate crowds though and Taksim Square's been emptied.

This coup has withered away pretty fast. I reckon the officers lied to the men (rank and file) to mobilize them. Probably told them there was a national emergency or terrorist threat or something, and when they realized what was really going on they began to slip away and give themselves up. There may be some pockets of officers holed up in some building somewhere but they certainly don't hold the street.

Same thing happened in Spain in 36 (Barcelona) and 82.

Got to admire the turkish people who took to the streets.

CNN Turk wtf

Canlı Yayın

Edit: was a random guy alternately ranting at the camera in an abandoned (but still streaming) studio, and phoning people. There's obvs lots of other people in the building too

Don't think they must have lied to them. AFAIR there's a tradition in Turkish military, to see themselves as 'guardians of the secular order', and they have plotted in the not so distant past for similar reasons. So it may not be as absurd for ordinary soldiers to fulfill such orders of their commanders, as it would be for troops in Western European countries.

But they failed to get hold of Erdogan himself, enabling him to call his supporters onto the streets. Probably the plotters underestimated this potential. But if your troops face hundreds of thousands of people of their own kind, who simply ignore your curfew, you've essentially lost. Another mistake might have been the curfew itself, because it meant their supporters would mostly stay at home, while those of Erdogan conquer the streets almost uncontested.

Big mistake. Their first priority should have been to capture, or better yet, shoot him. How unfortunate. Now he'll be more powerful than ever and will accelerate his program to push Turkey to a virtual theocracy.

Im sure it will be alright once they join the EU

Military coups are against EU law ...they would be fined..

Yeah. Thank fuck the UK is out of the EU. At least the UK doesn't have a military demoralised by failure in multiple theatres of war, starved of equipment and funds and charged with defending a society fractured along class, ethnic and national lines.

The army aren't this bad at coups. It seems obvious certain elements were duped into proceeding in the understanding that those higher up had secured Erdogan's removal.

Looking at the photos tweeted here, these young soldiers didn't have a clue wtf was going on & were clearly fearing for their lives. (Can't link to the lmages)

@Mr_Ghostly Stunning images of #TurkishCoup perpetrators being forcefully disarmed by the public in #Turkey.
