2016 Coup in Turkey?

Army will surely win tonight - erdogan had a slight majority in the country, but most of those are rural voters rather than in Istanbul and Ankora i think

Are you sure? the Facebook Live Map shows mass unopposed protests all over the country, which are against the coup. There are hundreds of thousands out on the streets.

Only military activity at mo is a single helicopter over Ankara. Just scrolled over a spot in Istanbul, Protestors clambering over parked tank.

Don't agree. On the contrary the coup seems to be on the retreat already. Additionally everyone seems to be condemning the coup, even if they partly had taken a rather neutral stance earlier this evening. Religious leaders. Every turkish political party, even the Kemalists and the pro-Kurdish HDP. Several western governements like the US and Germany. Even Erdogan's most hated enemy Fetullah Gülen.

Istanbul airport, which was closed by the military earlier, apparently was just taken over by counter-coup civilians.

Turkish Intelligence quoted as saying "The coup has failed. Those who took part will be tried for treason."

Doesn't take much for things to change though. One guy in one tank decides to fire on a crowd and things shift. Still too early to judge I think.

True, tanks are still surrounding parliament apparently. Very confused picture as tends to be the case with situations like this.

Oh my god... Just woke up to the news. I'm actually in Hong Kong all summer, am rather selfishly glad to be away from all the chaos. Things have been increasingly tense for several years.

Catching up on Facebook - friends in Taksim (city centre) said people were running down the streets in panic, ATMs are empty, people are stocking up on food and water. Very very worrying times :(

I thought of you as soon as I woke up this morning and saw the news. So glad you're already in HK.

Most of the videos/news is about what's happening in Istanbul. But it's Ankara that counts. A lot of blathering from the US/West about supporting democracy. But Erdogan's Turkey is not much of a democracy.

Sporadic rifle fire in east of Ankara, too. following Tolga's video link (Tolga Colakoglu)

Small arms fire going on in east of Istanbul. In the centre civilians have pried open the hatch on an armoured vehicle and are taking stuff out.

Anyone seen anything reliable on where Erdogan is?

It appears the military is divided & the police are loyal to Erdogan . Looks like the coup will fail. Damn!
