Your daily cat and kitten news

I was a bit worried about Romeo, forecast says it's -2 degrees and he's not been in for a few nights

My neighbour (who has the cat who spends a lot of time in mine) just sent a pic saying he's in hers for the night.

We're talking about joining forces to get him neutered and get his scratches checked out

Don't think he'd want to become a one household type of cat but it would be good if a few of us could look out for him

I've just been introduced to the delightful term 'gigantic trouble puffs' aka cat testicles

:) for community kittehs

although he has a bit of a kitler look going on

:hmm:

may also be worth seeking vet's advice on what to do about micro-chipping him, this is going to become compulsory soon and i'm not sure the law recognises the concept of community / time-share kittehs...

Mr Lyndon's slow recovery continues. A solid week of appetite stimulant, on top of the three weeks of Gabapentin, all seems to be paying off. Last week we were prepared to make the hardest decision, if it was needed. Tonight he ate his first full meal in 9 weeks. Check up tomorrow, cross everything.

we sort of already time share one cat. He is my neighbours cat but by choice spends a lot of the day sleeping at mine
I could be the registered person for Romeo with the knowledge that he'll probably always want to roam

I didn't know about compulsory microchip thanks for letting us know

Since his first happy yard jaunts, Jocky has become fearful of The Closed Door Of Doom. He won't stay out now unless the back door is left open, which is not doable in this weather. I think it's probably related to his previous owner dying inside while poor Jocks was locked outside. Hopefully, if he learns how to use the catflap once it's installed, that will remove that particular fear, I hope.

In other news, this is my usual regular part time cat share/community kitteh

he is called Buster by his human but I'd called him Vallers before I knew his human so now in my house he is Mr Bustah Vallers part time cat share
He lives with the person who is currently sheltering Romeo so it looks like the cats arranged some sort of swap and schedule of their own about who gets to be in which house at which time
most of the time Bustah Vallers just comes in to sleep under my bed or in my wardrobe for a peaceful sleep with away from other cats
this morning he wanted to supervise my WFH arrangements. He's back under the bed now

We had our postponed (due to COVID) Xmas day gettogether.

Jakey was ecstatic to have visitors, he absolutely loves people and thinks they come round just to see him of course, and spent the afternoon and evening moving between laps (he really loves both my parents) and purring loudly enough that the neighbours could probably hear him.

Now our guests have left, he is curled up on my lap sleeping a very contented sleep of a cat who is rightfully tired after a very good day :)

Morning thread. So he's lost almost 1kg overall, but he was probs 0.5kg over weight. Either way, he's lost a lot of muscle mass - you can't see it in my pictures but his spine and hips are way too visible and his weight is hanging low. However we've hopefully avoided any organ damage and certainly his heart sounds fine. Still some way to go to get him back to his old self, but he's stable for now.

Just woken up:

One of my cats (Frida) has been ill with something unknown - Wednesday went for annual health check and vaccination, all good, came home and she was fine all afternoon/evening. Went out wed/thurs night and didn't come back in the morning which is unusual but not unknown especially after a vet visit. Came back thursday night and drank some water which is rare, didn't want food and went under the bed to sleep which didn't seem right. Friday morning she didn't want food so took her to the vet, who couldn't find anything wrong, Saturday still hadn't eaten so took her back, still nothing obvious but a slight temperature so they took bloods and gave her an appetite stimulant and some metacam. She ate a tiny bit that evening but nothing on Sunday (but was still drinking) so on Monday I took her back in, she had an ultrasound which didn't show up anything except an excess of bile in her gall bladder which they said is not surprising as bile discharge is triggered by eating. They put her on a drip and kept her overnight, giving her an injection of either mertazapine or something else whose name I've forgotten.
Took her back tuesday evening and she is eating/sleeping - still not quite right as not interested in going outside but she's clawed away at the cardboard scratching pad and used the litter tray. Not seen her play with anything.

But my other cat (Rosa, who is Frida's kitten) has reacted badly, like she doesn't recognise Frida anymore. I'd kept Frida shut in a room after taking her into the vet on friday so Rosa could go outside but I didn't need to worry about Frida leaving and would know for sure if she'd eaten. she'd been a bit wary since then, staying downstairs when she's normally very clingy to Frida, I thought maybe she could smell frida was ill and was keeping away. Then after bringing Friday back from overnight at the vet, she's been hissing, hiding and running outside when Frida's been near. She's definitely very unhappy.
I've got some feliway comfort so I'm hoping that will solve the issue. I can't really keep them separated without trapping one in a single room which I'm loath to do as I'll think Rosa will be even less happy trapped in a room and I don't want to do anything to stop Frida from eating (she won't eat in the room she's sleeping in, she will only go downstairs to the normal place she eats to feed).
Frida is fine with Rosa.

Hopefully it'll click soon and things will return to normal but I wasn't expecting this. Any other suggestions as to what I can do would be welcome :)

Sorry to hear that Frida has been unwell, hope she feels better soon.

In terms of their relationship, Frida smells of the vet clinic, which is why Rosa is reacting badly to her, she simply doesn't recognise her as Frida any more, and the smell has bad connotations.

Step 1: rub Rosa with a towel, or if she has some bedding that she lies on a lot, use that. Then rub Frida with it. This will transfer some of Rosa's scent to Frida.

Step 2: There's this thing called "The Vanilla Trick". For this you must use a natural vanilla extract, not the little chemically vanilla essence bottles, I'm talking the more expensive natural extract stuff which should also be in the baking aisle of the supermarket.
Dab a little bit under each of their chins. Vanilla is safe and non-toxic for them, they also find it a pleasant scent, and it tricks them into thinking they both smell the same and pleasant to one another.

Step 3: If the above don't work - keep them separate for a few days, and try re-introducing them gradually as if you were introducing a new cat to the household.

Good luck :)

Thanks, I can definitely do the towel rubbing thing with some bedding rosa's been sleeping on and get some natural vanilla extract - thank you.

Frida seems to be much better, she is at least eating, just a mystery what the issue was - at least she didn't have an obstruction in her intestines or anything like that.

Glad to hear she's feeling better. Maybe she just felt slightly unwell after the vaccine, that's a thing that can happen.

Glad to hear she is recovering well!

I should just add about the vanilla - make sure to use a food grade extract for baking, not an aromatherapy type essential oil, as the latter will be a lot stronger and could irritate the skin and be toxic if ingested.
