One of my cousins lives in the New Forest. She bought a Jeep Wrangler to cope with the road conditions. She once had to turn back because there was, in her words, 6” of water at a ford. She said it was “impossible” to cross. She doesn’t understand my laughter. (She also claims to have had “a wonderful dinner with god.”)

Some friends invited us to lunch at a New Forest pub a few weeks ago, It is maybe 20 miles away (as you know). It took us an hour and a half to get there.

The Forest was full that day.
Yeah, I was being a bit disingenuous, cos the roads can be gridlocked, but once you get away from them and the car parks you can walk for miles without seeing hardly anyone. School holidays are over now though, so it's a bit quieter.

My dad lives in the New Forest near Beaulieu, he tries to avoid going anywhere at weekends, when everyone is pootling along at 20mph to gawp at ponies…

Yep, now the holidays are over, I'm looking at a pub stopover in the van before it gets too cold.
