What's for tea tonight? (pt4)

We had sloppy Chinese takeaway last night. Tonight I intend to cook something that has actual nutritional value.

Fajita's huh?

I usually do chicken but the boy way prefers steak. Whenever I do steak fajitas though the steak always comes out too chewy/rubbery. Where am I going wrong?

What cut of steak do people use for a start?

More often than not I use rump... and always comes out delicious. Try not to cook it for as long maybe?

I used to be crap at steak until I started cooking them from frozen

I'm ok at cooking actual steaks - like getting them nice and tender and rare like but it all falls down when I make fajita's.

Ooh! That's triggered a thought! Do people slice up the steak before they cook it or slice up the steak once it's cooked?

Last night i cooked red lentil and turnip pie, mashed potato with parsley, cabbage and gravy and it was lush, even if do say so myself.

All this talk of fajitas has made me want them tonight - instead of pasta pesto - I'll save that for tomorrow.

We're having chicken risotto tonight.

And for those keeping up, we got Hoggy's blood results back yesterday and they were not good - very high levels of urea in the blood. We're taking him in for more tests tomorrow and if he's improved then that's good, but if he hasn't then he's got kidney failure and there's nothing they can do. He does seem to be more perky, but he's nowhere near his usual self. He ate some fish last night and he is drinking water. We'll just have to wait and see.

On the plus side, the vet requested a urine sample and he immediately obliged by peeing all over the sofa the minute I got off the phone.

Rump! Rump is what you need and get it from a butcher if you can because supermarket meat is never that good.

Last night had to work til 11pm then had baked spud covered with dhal. Tonight will be either chips or another dhal plus much wine.

dont know, dont care, too tired to think. teso delivery is coming today, but i probably only ordered cake i was a bit hormonal when i did it.

i would like lots of wine with tea, but due to the womb squatter, i shall be on the fruit juice

I'm rooting for Hoggy, missfran :) All the best :)

We're having a Friday night tea here: potato wedges with sour cream dip, garlicky broccoli, and the boy is having a chicken breast as well. With cream doughnuts for afters :D

i had a cheese, marmite and salad wrap. followed by 2 cream slices and a custard donut :)

*pats full belly*

feyr - i wish i had come to yours for tea! :D

i had tagliatelle with bacon and peas in a creme fraiche, lemon and chilli sauce with corgette ribbons on top. i'm stuffed now...

but i could always make room for a cream cake :p

Kebab!

healthy one kinda

Chicken (fucking expensive :D ) marinated in yoghurt, tandoori paste, garlic and chilli and served with sliced cabbage, cucumber and tomato served wrapped in a warm nan bread.

I also have seekh kebab which I bascially make from beef mince, fresh coriander, garlic, fresh chilli, cumin and a bit of paprika.

I usually wrap em both up with either sliced cabbage or my prefered rocket leaf in a nan bread.

I'm trying to beat the take away but keep it healthy. I never add salt to anything, I hate the stuff.

I used skirt steak because that's what I had in the freezer and actually it's ideal for fajitas. It's not the tenderest of steak, but it's incredibly cheap and very tasty if you marinate it first and cook it rare/medium. I marinated it ifor two hours in soy sauce, lime, olive oil, tequila (!), garlic, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Then I griddled it for four minutes on each side and sliced it after it had been cooked and rested for a few minutes.

Served with salsa, Greek yoghurt and rocket in warmed tortillas. Yum!

My tortillas were mouldy :( the date on them was today! Tonight I'll be having fajita contents with chips :D
