What's for tea tonight? (#8)

Creamy chicken with steamed potatoes and broccoli. Managed to use up all the manky veg in the fridge apart from the mushrooms which were too far gone.
I’m having a go at frying the broccoli because I can’t be arsed to put the oven on.

I'm having round 2 of last night's chicken cacciatore which is probably going to be even better for having stood overnight, it's one of those dishes.

Haven't decided whether to have with rice or pasta yet, I had plain boiled basmati on the side last night, so might do some pasta to add into the pot tonight.

Tip for storing mushrooms, the fridge is not the best place for them - spread them out on paper (kitchen towel, newspaper, paper bag) so they aren't touching in a dark dry cupboard - they will last longer and even if they are there for a while will probably dry out rather than go mushy and dried/partially dried mushrooms are very much useable :)

Yeah they’re better out of the fridge but I don’t have anywhere else to store them. We have a pantry but it’s not dry at all. Everything has to be stored in sealed jars and tubs.

Nowt!
Been out for a late Sunday lunch so we're not hungry. Had a delicious steak and ale pie which was an actual pie rather than a stew with a pastry hat. This made me very happy indeed.

Pastry on the bottom is too much of a rare thing when sitting down to eat and ordering a pie somewhere. It should be a given if it is called a pie. I'd accept the US term "pot pie" for a stew with a pastry lid if it was described as such, but when it says "pie" with no further terminology or explanation, it really ought to have pastry on every face of the thing.

Good find :)

Ah I do understand that situation completely, in which case yeah sometimes the fridge is indeed the safest place for everything.

I couldn't agree more!
It was a beautiful, individual, oblong shaped pie. I believe the pastry had been made in-house and the filling was abundant and tasty. Very good indeed.

I used to when I was young - grew up rural and had a veg patch in the garden where my parents live. Unfortunately I've had no outdoor space for the last 30 years. I've managed some herbs in pots indoors which although isn't the level of veg growing that I would ideally like to be involved in, does provide some satisfaction. Not enough sunlight in winter for it though, but herbs in the summer are good on the windowsill.
One of the tomatoes I grow is a dwarf indoor variety that's totally happy in a fairly small pot on a sunny-ish windowsill. I have plenty of spare seeds if you or anyone else with no outdoor space wants to give them a try this year.

PM sent, thank you!!

Fresh batch of stew :-

Umami sludge from last batch ... dried shiitakes, kelp, red onions, garlic, carrots, potatoes, sprouts, canned tomatoes, canned chickpeas, ground flaxseed, nutritional yeast, tahini, Aldi Marselan...
The next batch may well have to start with broccoli instead ...

I'm defrosting a chicken breast and have loads of veg, am planning some sort of stir fry or Chinese "fakeaway"

Haven't quite decided which dishes to cook yet, and it will be a while before the chicken breast is defrosted so I think I am going to google for inspiration.

If all else fails I'll probably do my standard can't-think-what-to-have-and-easy-to-knock-out dishes which are kung pao chicken (with cashews instead of peanuts due to allergy) and spicy veggie lo mein - firm favourites but I do have them a lot, so will have a think before I make any decisions!

Will report back :)
