I’m sure I read somewhere at some point that someone suspected foul play from someone (his body guard?). Not sure why the security services would want that hushed though.
I think Megan is Ashley's sister, as in the characters. Megan is adopted, as I think was made clear in the third or fourth episode.

Yeah, the one where Ashley's nan dies. Meegan (sic) makes some snide comment about being less favoured because of her adopted status, I seem to remember.

That’s not Ashley’s nan. That’s Megan’s adopted nan. Ashley is there as Megan’s friend. In fact the family tell Ashley she shouldn’t be there.

I’ll probably watch it again soon, so I’ll report back if I’m misreading it.

Yeah, we gave it 20 minutes this evening but were far from gripped. I’ll give it another go when I’m less tired but Mrs Spy isn’t a fan of Shane Meadows, so doubt she’ll go back to it.

Couples Therapy is interesting. The premise is filmed therapy of couples from NY, with couples changing each season. It's not made along the lines of 'look at these freaks getting messy', it's actually quite relatable and I find myself rooting for these people. Generates good conversations, too. If comparing to Esther Perel's podcast, therapy is less sophisticated, but on the other hand you get the visuals.
I really REALLY wanted to like this, but fuck me, it's absolute shite. Think we lasted about 15 mins before the complete and utter lack of any attempt at authenticity in any area of it became actually fucking insulting. Gutted cos I bloody love Shane Meadows.
This, on the other hand, was just perfect. Totally captured how it felt at that age, in that summer, and both of the female leads are wildly talented as well as being just impossibly beautiful. It manages to completely avoid any exploitation too, which is rare and extremely welcome.

Meadows wasn’t aiming for historical verisimilitude - kinda difficult to do with improvisational method.
That's beside the point. Once any piece of art is released into the wild, it stops being about the creator and starts being about the reader/viewer.

I don’t agree with that at all! Historical rivet-counting is as tiresome as slavish attention to detail and can get in the way of the story-telling

I agree, it's a brilliant film and I'd like to rewatch sometime. I imagine it in a double bill with Me Without You (the 2001 one).
I'm not arsed if you agree with it tbh chuck, it is what it is. Artist intention is all well and good, but it holds no special weight, it isn't carried forward as an integral part of the art, and I speak as an artist. Reception, interpretation - this is where the art finishes up. I hated it for the reasons I outlined. I am unable to suspend my disbelief and sink into the story/enjoy the art if the dialogue/costume/whatever keep being flagged up with a great big horn blast as utterly inauthentic, if it sounds like a conversation I heard in the co op this affy.

Yeh, I would like to rewatch it too. It was so tender it made me ache at times.
