What stupid shit has Trump done today?

I'm sorry but I can't care about this Trump NFL shit, I'm just glad he's focused on, relatively trivial, racist bullying rather than nuclear war.

this is a bigger deal than it may appear outside the states, because of the fan culture around the NFL and the economic power of the league. the commissioner has already rebuked trump, the owners are not lining up to support trump, but sports radio is spuming with anti-kaepernick, pro-trump, anti-BLM, pro-cop, jingoistic venom. I'll be watching to see how many players kneel tomorrow and what the reaction in the stands is. i am obv not equating all this with bomb dropping or healthcare gutting, but it's not nothing and is already a flashpoint.

No I understand the Kaepernick protest is nothing to do with the flag, but it a protest about police brutality, and this is a crude attempt to portray black athletes as privileged and un american.

Just trying to figure out what Trump's trying to do. Yeah this is blood in the water for the media feeding frenzy, but does he think this shit will stop Mueller, or the Russia probe?

Kaep being blackballed can only be interpreted in one way - the owners are implicitly lining up to support Trump.

Yep, it's more raw culture war stuff and, from a neutral POV, Trump has deliberately stirred it, which should look appalling along with his raw disgust at freedom of speech / expression.

spot on.

he's being blackballed but you don't have to go as far as trump to find the reason for that. the fan base of the NFL is composed of reactionary lunkheads more than the fan bases of the other leagues, imho. the owners are in a spot, whether to support their players or the people who buy the tickets. if we see more demonstrations like the browns' on opening day or the jaguars' today, the owners will know what to say (whatever they think). it's not (just) trump vs kaepernick, it's america/sept. 11/virile manhood/capitalism/respect for the troops/blue lives matter/etc vs. blacks/liberals/feminists/social justice/snowflakes etc. kaepernick was the one to open the door and he'll never play again, probably. i'd think he must have known the possibility of that, which makes him a hero.

the jaguars owner sided with his players today.

No one is going as far as Trump, I am stating the simple fact that Kapernick is being singled out, and there is nothing trivial about that.

I think Trump's response to the NFL thing is very disturbing... as one black commentator on Twitter has pointed out, he has basically said it's fine for Nazis to protest, but some black guys kneeling down is completely unacceptable.

The stuff about him 'disinviting' NBA player Steph Curry for deciding not to come to the White House huffing that 'It's a great honour' etc etc displays all his pettiness. It's like YOU'RE THE PRESIDENT OF THE USA, YOU DON'T NEED TO DO THINGS TO MAKE YOURSELF LOOK IMPORTANT. I mean, Jesus....

This is truly awful.

Freeman is being awful, or the allegations he makes are awful?

While I think in some ways too much is made of the Russia thing, it's not as though it's nothing either. But I suspect Putin features larger in peoples minds than Trump's mafia connections, which really ought to bring the twat down.

This is one of the better authorities, probably been posted before but always worth a re-plug. Very engaging for those not familiar with the material.

It's easy to see it from both sides IMO but at the end of the day it's hard to see US folk getting too upset about other people interfering in their processes when they have been doing this fuckery for generations all around the world.

ETA: Not sure that guy is the best authority on Trump and Russian mafia but it's well worth watching. He ghost-wrote "Art Of The Deal" and has been contrite about it ever since.

For fucks sake Trump. Usually For 364 days a year the rest of the world just ignores the NFL.

It's notable that the NFL "tradition" of standing for the national anthem on the field dates all the way back to the misty halcyon days of....2009.

Would self appointed "patriots" get in a froth about something so fake and contrived? Come to think of it, do they ever do anything else?

The protests have always been against racist police brutality and for justice that should be guaranteed by the US Constitution. Trump and his fans of course don't want to engage with that.

So they turn it into dishonouring the flag and the service men and women. Since when has the flag been only a symbol of the military? Also forgetting that a high proportion of service personnel are people of colour who'll have experienced racism plenty.

And, of course there is a pattern in who Trump and his backers target, and it's not a new thing.

Feuding with the NFL? That's so stupid it seems more like the kind of thing Rob Ford would do, and at least he had the excuse of being drunk a lot of the time.

I think its pretty telling that Trump supporters are absolutely screaming about this made up NFL controversy. They were all for "free speech" when it was neo-Nazi's parading in the streets and even leaving injured and dead in the street. All of a sudden its not a free speech issue when the speech is something they don't want to hear. The cognitive dissonance is deafening.

What they should be doing is checking their back pockets to make sure their wallet is still there. This has all the hallmarks of a diversion.

The reality that the NFL players on the whole make very good money and are predominantly black riles many judging from stuff on other boards I have seen
This absolutely. When Trump and his supporters slate Black sports figures, celebrities, even politicians, there's a strong undercurrent that they do no deserve their status. Trump's appeal to the (mostly white) NFL owners was very much about getting their Black players back into line - y'know, like good plantation overseers or chain gang masters would have done. He did similar when calling for the sacking of an African American woman anchor on ESPN after she said he was a White Supremacist on social media.

Following on from the "Ungrateful as the New Uppity" piece above, I remembered reading about how many white Americans assume Black people get college paid for, and how reluctant they are to let go that belief if faced with the truth. It's kind of like some people I've talked to in the UK who insist they didn't get such and such job or so and so only got their position because they were POC. Explaining that no, that would be unlawful in the UK cuts no ice with them.

Oh yes - he said there were some "very fine people" among the self-declared Nazis marauding in Charlottesville but those demonstrating peacefully against racist policing and racial injustice were "sons of bitches." It's more raw meat for his like-minded supporters to gorge on.

I'm sure he and his team spout shit like this both because it chimes with their ideology and it feeds their baying pack. But yes, I'm sure they hope it will distract from other shit going down that could threaten their reign, no doubt about that.

Disturbing cries of kneeling protest being 'UnAmerican' going on... we all know how that refrain goes.

Trump Twitter lately is full of the kind of people of complain that Liberals and black people are 'looking for things to be offended about', looking for things to be offended about people kneeling at NFL matches.

Yup, we do.

Trump adviser says NFL players should be thankful no one has shot them in the head

One of President Donald Trump’s most vocal religious advisers waded into the NFL protest controversy this morning, saying those who kneel during the national anthem in a silent protest against racism should “thank God” they aren’t “shot in the head” as he believes they would be for protesting in North Korea.

Texas pastor Robert Jeffress, a Southern Baptist who heads up First Baptist Church in Dallas, made the comments during a Fox & Friends segment Monday morning. After claiming the widespread protests over the weekend disrespected “our country” and “our leaders,” he attempted to link the controversy to North Korea.

“I think tens of millions of Americans agree with President Trump when he says [NFL players who protest] ought to be called out for this,” Jeffress said. “I know this president. President Trump is not a racist. For President Trump this is not about race. It’s about respect of country.”

Jeffress has becoming an increasingly vocal supporter of Trump over the past two years, and recently claimed that God gives Trump the “authority” to attack North Korea or assassinate its leader Kim Jong-Un.

And Trump's Press Secretary also wittered on about honouring the flag, the anthem, the military and urged all Americans to back the President in condemning the sportsmen, but no he's not racist, blah blah blah. Transcript of "briefing" here.

David Cay Johnston is the authority on Trump (he's a Pulitzer winner and tax expert who's been looking at him since the 80's). The Making of Donald Trump is the book to start with (i think it might be on bittorrent somewhere).
