What new foods have you tried recently?

I just got this stuff in the international shop called kars tel peyrini, golden shredded cheese. I think there must be a knack to preparing it because it is basically rank straight out of the jar.
Ok, so I'm pretty sure you rinse and soak it (it's very salty) and then you can just eat it. It's actually quite good.

I had Rosquillas de Alcala. They are a glazed doughnut. The interesting thing was the texture - it was halfway between a croissant and a donut on the inside. I think that someone in New York City didn't really invent the "cronut" at all. They just happened upon something that had existed for a couple of centuries already.

Gin flavoured fudge from Cornwall....don't bother, was weird, stick to traditional butter milk or salted caramel.

Butter Pie.

It's a pie, filled with buttery mash.

I'd heard of them before but never seen them. Noticed them in Booths today so had to try.

Absolutely filthy stodge mess, but pretty tasty.

In no rush to buy again.

Went to a nearby Japanese restaurant today that I didn't even know existed until a few days ago. Miso soup starter, with the softest tofu I've ever tasted. Managed to eat an entire dish using only chopsticks, which I don't think I've ever done before. Chicken stir fried noodles with sesame, garlic and ginger. Elegant simplicity in the pursuit of deliciousness. Washed down with some surprisingly sweet plum wine.

Definitely an experience I would like to repeat.

I was at the deli stocking up on essentials - dates, figs, tamarind, halva and Turkish delight :D
I thought it was time to try some Indian desserts and I was pleased to find some dairy-free.

First up - "soan papdi" which is a bit like a lightened halva - but with whole cardamoms - so it's a bit full-on.
I'll try to persevere, but I doubt I'll buy another box.

The milky ones are the best ones.

I developed a bit of a taste for soan papdi, so went back for more ... and sadly found several products where the ghee had been replaced with a vegan-friendly alternative - starting with Baklava - which I'd always assumed was made using ghee and honey so I have no excuse unlike with most Xmas commestibles which seem to have milk and butter back in the ingredients :(

So I also came back with yet more halva-ish delights - plus a bag of gram flour...

1. besan burfi - a bit like fudge...

And Laddu - which have semolina to make them more cake-like ..

All of that stuff's delicious but you can feel your arteries thickening with every bite. Try the jalebis.

I experienced a very special mushroom risotto, which, remarkably, contained pickled gherkins! I initially didn't notice the gherkins but took one forkful and almost puked! I called the waiter over and asked him WTF I was eating, and he couldn't answer, and asked if I'd like to speak with the chef. I took him up on his offer, and the chef duly arrived, and explained that 'gherkins' were his twist on risotto!!! I advised him TO give up the day job, and refused to pay for the slop I'd been served.
Risotto... with fucking gherkins!!!

Chinese curry samosas - Not sure what I was expecting, but it's literally curry sauce in a litle fried triangle of whatever samosas are made of. More like a won ton than an Indian samosa. Tasty enough, but felt like a very unhealhy snack rather than a starter.

Dark chocolate chip oat biscuits - Like a dry, healthy hobnob. Taste OK, but no one eats biscuits for "OK". Would avoid, unless it's the only treat I could get with my ration pack in a post-apocalyptic future.

I did try some Carolina Reaper chilli sauce though. That was a new experience

Mmmm.... lovely

Was in a Mexican-ish restaurant earlier this week. Had a chilli bean burrito. Asked them to make it twice as hot as the hottest thing they do.

Was barely as hot as a Foxes' fucking glacier mint :(
