What new foods have you tried recently?

Why have ya gone all fracais GG?
Er, meant francais
:)

I changed the language on my phone so I can quickly check up on French vocab I encounter using speech recognition. (and my pronunciation of phases I conjugate myself)the AZERTY keyboard is a minor inconvenience.
I have 3 years to get fairly fluent so I am switching over as much as possible. :)

I thought sorrel was a liquor made in the Caribbean? As well as a herb, that is.

I think the drink is made from hibiscus flowers, called flor de Jamaica in Mexico (and possibly elsewhere in C and S America). I don't know why it's called sorrel - maybe that's the name for hibiscus in the Caribbean? But afaik a completely different thing.

edit: "Sometimes referred to as Jamaican sorrel, or Caribbean sorrel, sorrel is the common name given to the sepals of a hibiscus plant called Roselle, (or Hibiscus sabdariffa if you want to get technical). It’s important to note that there is a leafy green herb that is also called sorrel, but it is unrelated to this plant."

Thanks, I found the same page after I posted

Durian (thanks Bourdain :)), mangosteen, whole green peppercorns, a pond water looking southern Thai fish curry which I was told I wouldn't like, green tea ice cream, snake fruit, deep fried jack fruit.

Today I had ostrich burger for lunch, not new, but the place also has camel, and zebra burgers. I've got some to have later.

Buttonhole kale, v nice, would buy again. Kind of like a cross between cabbage and kale.
Albacore tuna - I didn't actually think it was as nice as normal tuna which I do love for a treat. Bit bland but I don't know how much the colour tricks your taste buds.
I'm cooking with graffiti aubergines tonight but I don't expect they'll taste any different.
I bought some garlic olive oil a while ago, it's a bit rank.

Got some Patty Pan squash in my veg box. They look cool. Haven't tried them yet.

Figs. Specifically the partially rehydrated ones from tesco. I've always loved fig rolls so saw these and thought, mmm, nice wholesome snack.

They taste lovely, however, I was struck by how much they resemble a plump brown anus! Erk :D

I just got this stuff in the international shop called kars tel peyrini, golden shredded cheese. I think there must be a knack to preparing it because it is basically rank straight out of the jar.

sea urchins . Delicate browny squidgy type ones that taste of the sea and something you cant quite put your finger on but are something quite different from anything I have ever tasted before.
