What new foods have you tried recently?

coconut oil.
used as lard substitute.
i wouldnt fry a steak in it but its good in curries/meat in the pot randos.

Me too this week. I love it. I wouldn't fry a steak in it either, but I'd fry an egg in it

Also had south Indian beetroot chutney. Veggie mates have been extolling the virtues of curried beetroot for years but I wasn't convinced. We have a glut of beetroot at the moment so I made this one. It is really easy and delicious, and I can't stop eating it.

"Rice seasoning" - seaweed, sesame seeds and cod roe for sprinkling over rice. Fishy flavour a bit too strong for me.
Hake - lovely.

Deep fried brie (!)

I ordered it and expected it to be a few bite-sized pieces but it was an entire wedge like you buy in the supermarket. The outside was perfectly crunchy, golden breadcrumbs and the inside was a hot gooey mess.

It's supposed to be the healthiest oil apparently. We've got some in as part of Mrs Spy's health drive.

Fucking expensive though.

How do you use coconut oil? I was given some recently but it's in a narrow-necked jar and has the consistency of wax or set honey.

Do I need to heat it to melt it before I can get it out of the bottle?

Just spoon it out. It's very soft and melts at anything slightly above room temperature.

This is it on the right

I guess that bottle isn't made for UK temperatures :D

I tried tripe for the first time today. I made a breaded tripe dish, but I think I fucked it up. I boiled it for a few hours first as instructed, before breading and frying, but it boiled away to hardly anything and tasted like and had the texture ofboiled chicken skin in breadcrumbs.

I reckon the stuff must have been pre-boiled.

luckily I have another pack in the freezer and will try again
