What new foods have you tried recently?

Microwavable cheese popcorn; this one tasted of cheese more than of salt, probably because there was quite a bit of fat to carry the flavouring.

Microwave quinoa - haven't decided what to have with it yet ...

I've had quinoa as a ready-made salad with celery and walnuts and quite liked it ...
I'm growing it in my garden this year and plan to try popping it.

I tried something new recently but not quite sure exactly what it was. I got it from a Singaporean friend who said it's just known as "olive". It was in a jar and if they were olives, they were shredded/minced. Texture a bit like bean paste. It was really nice, anyway.

Maybe one of the Asian based Urbz knows what it is Dandred or Yu_Gi_Oh ?

Korean food is pretty insular, not much get here that isn't Chinese, and even then it's Korean Chinese.

Not heard of that though.

Had pigeon for the first time the other night. It was a bit shitty tasting. I don't think I'll bother again.

Olive tapenade? Can be a smooth or coarse paste

It was similar to that, but more solid. Imagine an olive version of sauerkraut if that's possible. Hard to describe. And I was drunk so maybe misremembering.

Will find out more when see friend again

I really like pigeon. It is a bit shitty tasting though. I think the technical term is "gamey".

:D But there's gamey, and there's shitty-gamey. Pheasant is nice, venison is nice. Grouse is shitty, and so was this pigeon.

for actual shit-tasting (although tbh I found it quite pleasant) try an Andouillette. I had one last year in a moment of bravery. It was ok, although I don't think I'll ever need to have another.

*shudder* That stuff just makes me think of Fear Factor. I know what you mean, though - I once had a shitty soft shell crab that was delicious.

One chimichanga. It was okay but nothing special. Tbf it was from a healthfood shop and at least it was onionfree.

A couple of goats cheeses (is that the plural for cheese?) Harbourne Blue which was a nice hardish goats cheese, but I was hoping for a more "blue" taste, and tomme de chevre which was the bollocks. Real nice, creamy. Will eat again

I made a new friend and they're lovely BUT also almost vegan :D today i had a delicious vegan brunch of fermented tofu omelette, made with chickpea flour, something or other yeast and salad. There was coconut bacon but I didn't really like that

Also had asparagus gnocchi at BFI the other night.

It's quite interesting seeing the broad choices you can have as a veggie/vegan these days when eating out. :)

blue_corn_tortillas.jpg

Blue corn tortillas. In spite of their appearance they're not mouldy, or made out of slate. Like them a lot. They're a tiny bit more delicious than ordinary maize tortillas (they've got a stronger taste of earth / vegetable / corn) but not worth paying extra megabucks for. What is worth it is the novelty value and it makes you realise just how much the colour of a food affects how you perceive it. I kept stopping and looking at them as I ate, thinking "hmmm..... blue .... weird ... hmmm...." .

(I LOATHE and never even touch blue cheese, btw. so these may yet be one of the very very few blue things I will ever eat.)

I know the stuff you mean! I have some in the fridge. There is a fruit called the Chinese Olive here which is properly known as a Canarium, it comes whole, fresh, dried and sweetened, or shredded in a jar with oil like you have. :)

I nearly tried a prickly pear the other day, but it gave me splinters just touching it for a couple of seconds and I became fearful and disposed of it. Mr Yu got a manky infected finger from it, dangerous fruit!

I have also tried a fresh kiwi: delicious! And bananas in various stages of ripeness: all delicious but give me stomach ache. :(

you should try blue corn chips then...they're really tasty

for anyone who's confused, blue corn is natural...there are several different colors of corn including red, blue, purple, orange, green, pink, and yellow..and yes, they taste different. blue/ other colored corn is not as sweet as yellow corn ime, more earthy as trabaquera said, which lends itself to more savory dishes & snacks

Back in the day, I discovered blue corn tortilla chips; ruinously expensive if on the dole (as I was at the time) but OMG so good, and they turned humous and crudites into half of a feast, which was vegan, vegetarian, safe for me, and which meat eaters enjoyed.
