What new foods have you tried recently?

These delicious fucks. Expensive as hell (£2.39 for 90g) but oh so good :thumbs:

Razor clams. Like clams but more exciting. Slightly more complicated though. Sheffield types they (and normal clams, and so much more) are available in a remarkably fresh state from the fishmonger/butcher on West Street.

cocoa nibs

thought they were plain but it turned out they were covered in dark chocolate. Oh, Trader Joe's  that's so like you.
They were good though...like a smaller version of chocolate covered espresso beans that don't end up making you feel like this:

eta: this all sounds pretty good! (health benefits of cocoa nibs)

They've got some stimulanty stuff in them (inc caffeine) afaik, but yes - lovely stuff (I've got some plain btw, choc covered is better).

yeah, now that you mention it I am feeling far more alert than I was before I ate them

real-time update: yeah, this is definitely a stimulant
I was very sleepy when I got home after a long, sleep-deprived weekend...now I'm very wide awake and getting urges to clean and organize everything and I need to get out and take a walk to get rid of this energy!

What do you do with them and what do they taste like? They're dead cheap and always on sale in London

Rinse the clams to get rid of any surface dirt. Start with a mirepoix; Very finely chop celery, carrot, onion and simmer a bit to soften (with white wine). Add more wine and get it all to a rolling boil. Add the clams, put a lid on it and leave for 30 seconds or until they open - short a time as possible. Take the clams out (leaving the mirepoix and wine to reduce), remove them from their shells, get rid of the obvious shit sack and the mouth end (well, not sure it's the mouth, the dirty end). Rinse to clear of any grit, chop, return to the mirepoix and serve immediately. I think I overcooked mine slightly. They taste like shellfish... um. Quite a consistent, seafoody flavour when compared to their cousins (probably because they get cleaned so you're only eating the meat). Meaty texture, nice.

Another option on the cooking front is add your mirepoix/wine (clams removed) mix to short grain rice/orzo and make a risotto. Add the chopped clams right at the end. Fucking lush.

:D

Hope you got some kip in the end, check the chemical content of your snacks before munching next time.

I feel awful today. :( probably partly because it took about 3 glasses of wine to calm down enough to sleep

that being said, I will definitely get some next time I need to get stuff done and have time for 8+ hours of sleep afterwards
and there was no warning. thinking about it, US doesn't really have warnings for caffeine either. It's usually in very fine print somewhere "contains caffeine" but I don't think they're obligated to list the amount under the nutrition information. hmm.

It's not exactly food but someone insisted I try their coconut water yesterday without telling me that they'd added BCAAs to it. Then looked at me all expectantly and couldn't work out why I didn't gag and try to spit it out. Apparently like bitter medicinal tasting stuff makes me wierd :D

I've just had Chitterlins avec Camembert et Slad. I thought that the chitterlins where rather similar to queijo cabeça. The Camembert was sublime, but I am in Camembert so I'd expect it to be.

Tonight was interesting - Roast glazed Quail - in a sort of sweet and sour glaze/sauce with tiny Caper-like things. Surprisingly absolutely delicious.

Then the outstanding taste of the night - A dessert that involved thin strips of fresh pineapple, very lightly cooked with sugar and finely chopped fresh corriander and sprinkled with some finely chopped nuts and spices. I cannot describe how delicious this is! :D

I have to be careful with it, yes - Its Melon that's the worst for me. The light cooking however did for whatever it is that burns my mouth. :)

Bromelain (the enzyme in pineapple, kiwi fruit, and papaya which breaks down protein, including human tissue) is destroyed by heat. So, if the slices were thin and cooked, that's why you got away with it.

Are the levels also affected by the degree of ripeness? I do find I'm less likely to have problems with a very ripe fruit compared to a less well ripened one. Trouble is, by then, the texture of the pineapple is often not what I like. :(

AFAIK yes. Unless you love pineapple, try to see it as an advantage that you don't much like something which has a bad effect on you; it makes it easier to avoid. Annoying when it's used to give so much stuff a sweeter taste or to make it taste a bit more exotic, though.

i had some lovely paneer in a wrap at Glastonbury recently. it was beetrooty in some way which definitely went well.

i have actually had paneer once before, can't remember where but i thought it was vile! so this was my first appreciation of paneer.

Paluszki z wiśniowa ("sticks with cherry"). Imagine a jaffa cake, made in the shape of a chocolate finger, and keep the sponge part a bit softer. Now make the jelly cherry flavour instead of orange. I wouldn't get them every week, but they're nice enough once in a while.
