What new foods have you tried recently?

I tried a pigeon egg at the weekend. I didn't really realise what it was, there was just an egg floating in this clear soup so I ate it and then looked up and saw everyone at the table was looking at me expectantly before they ate theirs. :D  It was just an egg, much like any other egg but a bit smaller.

I also tried this stuff which was called lettuce, but looked and tasted nothing like any lettuce I've ever eaten before. It was round and disc-like, about the size that a slice of courgette would be. It was crunchy and the green colour was lettuce-like I guess, but it was thicker, and as I've said, not anything like lettuce. I really liked it though.

Ah-ha! It was celtuce! It looked like this though. But more floppy and cooked, iyswim.

I love your posts Yu_Gi_Oh :) Celtuce! WTF?

I had squid flavoured seaweed tempura (out of a bag like crisps). I think they were good but my 2 year old jacked a good 95% of them  From the same Chinese supermarket, I had (I think) Korean seaweed salad, which was delicious. Lots of sesame oil.

sweet potato crisps from M&S. OM NOM NOM. And they're amazingly lurid orange and purple in colour. 10/10 on all fronts (except nutritionally where I guess they're every bit as bad for you as ordinary crisps with a few spoonfuls of extra sugar.)

Txipirones en su Tinta (Squid with black ink sauce)...proper stuff in the Basque country, a bit weird and tasted like there was a lot of red wine or madeira in it. Must confess I didnt like it (and not cos of the dishes appearance).

I'm not sure that's quite true (I'm posting this blind - that is, without googling first, so expect me to be wrong). Potatoes we've been led to believe are nutritionally worthless, but sweet potatoes (which aren't related to potatoes any more than celery or turnips) contain protein and are, I'm guessing by their texture, high in fibre.

I tried to try crab on Friday, but I couldn't work out how to get it out of the shell using chopsticks. No one else at the table was having a go either so I had no one to copy.

I've just developed a taste for crab - some of the places here provide nutcrackers break the shell, then it's fingers and sucking. Otherwise I think you just have to break the shell with your teeth. As my husband pointed out the other night, really not a first date food :D

Yesterday I fried cubes of aubergine in olive oil then added honey and a sprinkle of sesame to serve. I've had it as tapas but this is the first time I've made my own. Very tasty and, because the oil was very hot, not greasy.

I made an aubergine curry yesterday, but instead of using a few dried curry leaves like I usually do I shoved a good handful of fresh methi in. I'm never looking back

A Tunnocks caramel log.
Just like a caramel but covered in toasted coconut. I'm going to hunt down a regular supply as it was delicious :)
Poundworld. Got some myself last week for festival snacks. Best mate Mogden did complain about coconut between the teeth but liked them all the same.

The elk salami is very nice by the way - definitely worth trying. Unlike other salami, it didn't make me feel like I had heartburn afterwards, so I wonder what they put in other salami that is different. :)

Speaking of that fake yoghurt coating stuff, anyone tried to make a version at home? Is it even possible without a chemistry set and a degree?

I made a ratatouille the other day by frying off the veg separately then layering them all with sliced tomatoes on the top and baking it for 40 mins. It was a completely different meal and about a million times nicer than the stewed ratatouilles I've had before.

Quorn 'ham' had a sort of flat cat food.consistency
Quorn 'pork' pies - a bit dry tbh..could have done with some branston.

A disappointing report from the front line of neophagy:

Rambutans. Like disappointing, hairy lychees.
Sainsburys Swiss milk chocolate with marc de champagne truffle filling: absolutely revolting, like the cheapest most vegetable fat laden chocolate. I tried a bit as I was leaving the shop and turned straight round and asked for a refund.

PS isn't marc basically what's left over after the grapes have been pressed? As opposed to something posh which is what it sounds like.
