US election 2012

Neutral pundits have been saying for months that the right wing extremism demanded by the tea party would cause democrats to get out and vote, and make swing voters veer away from the republicans.

The sad thing is that many of the people who were the grass-roots of that movement were partially correct - the amount of money the US government spends in many, many areas is far in excess of what it should spend, and its incredibly important that the US cuts its spending in these areas.

Of course, the people who took that movement over ensured that much of that waste - defence, healthcare, tax cuts, foriegn aid - was off the table when it came to discussion and so they ended up talking about state-funded abortion, millionaires being able to keep their millions and Obamacare.

So it's around 11:30pm and they've called it? Even discounting the last election we probably wouldn't be finished at this time GMT! And we're a third the size of Texas!

US polls tend to close way earlier than ours though. UK polls continue until 10pm

And Texas does not have a population of 180 million ;)

Fox are about to get one of their hacks - who called the Ohio election for Obama - to debate their decision to call it with Karl Rove, who disagrees with that call.

This may be hilarious, and so worth watching.

What's crazy is that some states were 'called' after only 3% of the vote was counted. How does that work? Also, the polls were open in California while the results were being broadcast from the East coast. And then, the California results are in before the places with the queues and extended opening times in the East have even stopped voting.

Truly weird.

Fox news talking about soul searching amongst republicans - actually making valid point - this whole tea party thing has damaged them - they need to move closer to the centre to have any chance of winning next time.

Now the Democrats will have to find a new candiate for 2016, the race starts now.

Networks call them on the basis of exit polls and early results from the first few counties. Easy job in non-competitive states, the polls just confirm what we already knew anyway. The result isn't official until the precints have all reported but in reality, we all know California is a shoo in for Obama

Clinton.

On Fox, Megan Kelly has just walked about a hundred yards live to see two Fox employees explain why Karl Rove was talking out of his arse.

Great television.

Makes sense, cheers.

One thing I've wondered: if the networks call it based on the projected count, and the 'loser' concedes. What happens if the count comes out in favour of the loser? Is it too late because he/she conceded?
