Uruguay vs England (Group D) Thursday 19th June 2014

Doubling this up with Italy vs Costa Rica as a draw in both matches (about 10/1).
This group could end up with four teams on four points and I have a couple of quid from pre-tournament on Costa Rica getting through at 12/1.

Any recent news, speculation or mean-spirited rumours?

This is developing into an interesting and brilliant World Cup. There are a number of developments to have come out of this.

The demise of Spain. The rise of youth and the realisation of some national coaches to blend more of them in with experienced players (Hodgson deserves a creditable mention here). Holland beat Spain but had a close encounter against plucky and steely Australia. Columbia look good, Brazil look nervous, the Germans are doing their usual controlling efficiency football, Argentina are yet to get into top gear, Italy are like the Germans true to their stereotype with minimalistic approach.

Mexico and Chile have shown a style of play that can take on the big guns, close them down and beat them on fast counter attacking football. Confidence is huge part of this, both teams had the self belief and determination to enable their performances and the results they achieved. They were not overwhelmed, Chile fear no one, they beat us at late last year at Wembley, remember?

For England to win against Uruguay we need to learn from this. We have the players who can zip the ball with speed upfield on the counter attack (the goal Sturridge scored against Italy shows we can do this). But in defending there needs to be the zero tolerance for space as shown by both Mexico and Chile. tika taka is dead...long live ataka ataka!

Rooney needs to start, in a more central role, I think he should start but not necessarily finish. Rooney can be tenacious and close players down and can deliver killer passes as shown in Sturridge goal, and of course needs to start fucking scoring at world cup finals...

Gerard needs to shut his gob up on things like the pain of defeat... and focus on closing down the likes of Suarez his Liverpool team mate.

Our Achilles heel is our left flank, Baines struggled against Italy, Rooney covering him didn't work and switching Welbeck to Rooneys position did not prevent the second Italian goal. Uruguay will be more than aware of this. It has to be addressed.

And I need to get to the off and get some beer in..... and some hankies just in case....

Very confident of an England win here for a few reasons - mainly because they were awful against Costa Rica and we were actually quite good against Italy.

I think it doesn't really matter whether Suarez plays or not. First of all how many times has he actually produced in the big games for Liverpool? Secondly there is not a chance he will be fit, not even close to fit. If he plays I think he will be totally ineffective

he'll come on at 70mins i think, but agree, we really should win this....

big risk bringing him on as a sub because if he breaks down then either they need to use another sub or play with 10 men. if they're going to play him they may as well do it from the start imo

clever! what was his injury?

Someone needs to stick one on Suarez in the first 10 mins.

I had the same operation that Suarez is just coming back from. I don't remember how long it took me to come back.
