Urban75's Album of the Year 2012 - the polls are open

belboid

Exasperated, not angry.
Can you believe it? It's that time of year again (okay, its a day early, but I'll be too drunk to do it tomorrow). As soon as I'd seen the new Rihanna album was out, I knew that every significant album release had been made (well, except for the Scott Walker, the Singing Adams, the Olly Murs...), and it was time for the event of the year.
Yes, it's the annual, more marvellous than the Mercury's, better than the Brits, less smartarse than Pitchfork, Urban 75 Album of the Year.
As in previous years, top 20's pm'd to me asap, so I can do a rundown shortly before the big day (tho is any day really bigger than the revelation of urbans favourite album??).
I do not promise not to fuck it up.
Votes cast on this thread will not be included, PM'ed ones only.
A reminder of those rules again:
1. You PM me a list of your favourite records that were released this year. In order, from 1 to whatever number you feel like (tho I'll stop counting after 20). SOMETIME BEFORE DECEMBER 15TH
2. I assign points based on your orders of preference. NOTE: If you simply submit a list, unnumbered, I will assume it is in order of 1 to whatever, unless you tell me different
3. Sometime nearer Christmas I give you a rundown, TOTP style, of the top 30, and you lot bicker, complain, and heckle.
As agreed (ahem) in previous years, to qualify as an album, it must be a new or live recording that was released in 2012 in the UK. Does that pack of 8 7"s count? That seventeen minute white noise workout only available as an app? Well, no it doesn't, not in my book, but if you dont tell me otherwise, I wont know.
Results will be posted on December 17th - giving you time to go and buy your niece/nephew the No.1 to show you're 'hip' and down with the kids.
Polite requests:
Please don’t reveal your list on this thread, save it till the final list is up. Otherwise it can start to become too apparent who is a likely winner (and, unlike previous years, I really have absolutely no idea at the moment).
Please send me your list going from first to last, not vice versa, and with the artist listed before the album title, Comma separated values would be handy, for ease of importing, but I’ll not be greedy (or should I...a whole extra point to the submitters No. 1 if they do it all in the appropriate format....)
And that’s about it, I think....let the arguments begin, n the lists flow....

I've PMed my list.

Haven't included Swans, although I'm sure it'll be as good as all their others, as I haven't heard it in its entirety yet.

Number one was obvious, though.

I am tempted to 'Like' some of these posts, but that would be biasing....

And, young Daniel, one of your records hasn't even been released yet!

I cant even remember what albums have come out this year tbh.

*goes to read his own blog for a reminder.

I could only find 4 I had bought this year that were released in 2012 , one isn't on amazon or itunes - only on the band's website, and maybe a couple of shops- are those eligible?

I bought a couple of the 2011 list after it was posted - so will be watching closely this years top albums - they might get a minor sale increase in 2012

Swans? Wasn't that the ill fated Billy Corgan thingy where they all took loads of drugs and shagged each other (accept Billy of course)

I can only think of 1 CD I've bought from 2012.

Graham Coxon - A+E

Its pretty good, so we have a winner.

Anyway - I'm inherently suspicious of such short term judgements. An album needs a good 5-10 years to mature and be contextualised in the grander scheme of things. Oh yes, some of the time..

Swans- the seer came out this year. :)

I've never even heard of the swans.....

From my point of view, there were a lot of fucking excellent albums this year, from death grips (2 bloody brilliant albums this year), laid blak, the destroyers, squarepusher (i think that was this year), Niveau zero, clark, ruby my dear, bong-ra, die antwoord, gentlemens dub club (new EP, do those count?)

I bet im the only one who would vote for any of those though.

*goes to google the swans

Last year I only heard of the modeselektor and martyn albums because of the album of the year thread.
